Having said all that, I frequently use two spaces out of habit. I learned to word-process on blues screen word perfect, after all. I shall redouble my efforts to eliminate the superfluous space.

This whole discussion makes me laugh. I always use two because that was what I was taught. Recently I talked to a friend at Duke UP and asked him if it mattered whether I use one or two when I submitted manuscripts. He laughed and said that almost everyone submits it with two spaces and they just change it with one of their nifty little publishing programs.

When I asked if it bothered him when he received submissions with two spaces he laughed and said he's meticulous, not anal retentive and that if it ever gets to that point then he knows it's time to move on and look for another career.

I do almost all my writing in LaTeX. It inserts extra space at the beginning of a sentence (not sure if it is a full two spaces but it is more) ... Anyways, if you don't like the extra space behavior you can disable it with the following command:

That's enough to double space for me.

No, that's no longer the case. All the style guides have switched over, but it sounds like there's still a lot of contexts in which double space is still preferred by common law.

Unfortunately when I click quote I can see the original text with the double spaces, but I don't hold those against you. Really.

Actually, it's not vbulletin that does it. It's the browsers. Put all the spaces you want, and it still renders as one. But if you want to force the issue, I guess you could use tabs or   or force a fixed-pitch font.

I learned to use two spaces, and prefer it that way, even if youngsters think I'm over the hill and twice as dusty. It sets off sentences better, and makes it easier to read.
