Ever heard of the Dvorak keyboard? It's much more efficient, and particularly helpful to those with carpal tunnel problems. I don't use it, but know some people who do. I guess you'll be single-spacing from now on.

My BIL is a journalism professor, and is (IMO) an excellent writer - he freelanced for years and has published 3 or 4 books. I notice whenever he sends me an email he always starts with my name and follows it with a colon (Art: ... ), instead of the typical comma. Is this a one space-two space thing (I automatically double space, since it is what Mrs. Diehlman taught me to do, and is too ingrained to change), or his own convention/quirk?

I use colons with business correspondence, commas with personal, and I believe that's standard. Your BIL has very clearly defined your relationship.

I use the colon in formal letters. But, I do it more often in email than in print.

His colon (the punctuation, not his large intestine) has given you the clear instruction to send him an invoice for all your time and materials. Of course, if you do so you may hear from his other colon.
