Wait, so now I have to pay for overpriced Apple movies and purchase a contract to Apple Music?Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostAmazon is digging their own hole: http://www.wired.com/2015/10/amazon-...tv-chromecast/
But can you get Apple movies and Apple Music on your Roku? (All you can eat apple music for you and five of your friends/family for $14.99/mo.)
Yeah, the Roku is ok as long as you just want to stream crap... http://business.financialpost.com/fp...eaming-anymore

Apple Music for the friends and family plan ($15/mo for a family of six) is a deal compared to spotify premium. Spotify's family plan is $10/mo for Dad, $5/mo for Mom, $5/mo for kid1 (ah the hell with the kids... let them bootleg their damn music off bit torrent).Originally posted by old_gregg View Postsincere question: why would anyone ever use either of these services?"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

I just let my wife and my kids use my spotify account. Hardly any overlap, and I don't have to use apple's crappy interface or pay an extra $5!Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostApple Music for the friends and family plan ($15/mo for a family of six) is a deal compared to spotify premium. Of course, you could do the same thing with Apple music but with six families all for $15/mo or $2.5/mo each."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

My wife is buying a MacBook, she doesn't want an Ultrabook like mine. Given the direction that Windows is going, that's probably a good idea.
It won't be used for any high end purpose, no video editing and that kind of stuff. That said, I would like the thing to be able applications heading into the next several years.
So, does she get the MacBook Pro or MacBook Air?
She's probably going to keep the SSD at 128GB, going to 256 costs $250 more. Photos and videos will either go on an external drive or a USB drive.
Right now at B&H Photo the 13 inch MacBook Air is $950 with 4GB and $1,000 with 8GB, I'm thinking 8GB RAM is no-brainer and advisable regardless. I think the MacBook Pro is $1200 with 8GB. The MacBook Air with the better processor is around $1,170. I figure you're better off with the MacBook Pro at that point, but the battery lasts longer on the Air and it's lighter.
So, we're looking at either the 13 inch Air with 8GB of RAM and the basic processor, the same model with the upgraded processor (2.2 GHZ i7) or the 13 inch MacBook Pro with the basic specs (128GB SSD, 8GB of RAM).Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Both great choices. Just the classic tradeoff of a power vs portability. She is going to love it either way.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostMy wife is buying a MacBook, she doesn't want an Ultrabook like mine. Given the direction that Windows is going, that's probably a good idea.

My 15" MBP is 3 yrs old and still as solid as the day I bought it. And still plenty powerful.Originally posted by old_gregg View Post13" air. best laptop i've ever owned."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

The question is essentially an i5 vs and i7 on the Air, and whether that's worth an extra $180. Will the i7 actually get 6 more months of use or so and is the processor typically a limiting factor with Macs. In my experience with PCs, and I'm a non-gamer typical user, the processor is never the reason a PC becomes obsolete, it's always been the RAM or the video card or some combination of both.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostBoth great choices.
