Last year for Christmas I got the wife of Space Ghost a big fat nothing. It wasn't my finest day... no excuses. But I didn't learn much. For her birthday this past summer, I got her a piece of paper that said: "An e-book reader that doesn't suck... still looking." (And I still haven't found one.) So, essentially, I got her nothing. She has made it clear - in certain terms - that an 0 or 3 streak would not be good for my health.
Dude, you've got balls the size of watermelons.

Which brings us to your Christmas wish list to her.

Okay, SpaceGhost. Seriously. I will help you out, but I need some help from you. I can think of a couple of things I would like, but I don't know your wife's tastes. For instance, does she like purses, jewelry, fragrant lotions... is there a magazine she always buys when she goes to the store? Give me some info and I will give you some input.
Technically, they BOTH like the fragrant lotions.

This has been my m.o. for years and it has paid rich dividends. It requires a few bucks, but if you can spend at least in triple digits, I strongly recommend it.
Go to a clothing store your wife likes. If you have no idea what this is, go to a Talbots, Chico's or Nordstrom, all of which almost always have great service. Look around at the ensembles that are on display and think if your wife would look good in any of them to get an idea of what you're looking for. Soon, a sales assistant (and hopefully she'll be young and attractive--a bit lechy on my part, I suppose, but you might as well enjoy the experience) will come up and ask if she can help (one year my assistant was a transvestite, but that was at Macy's, never again). Explain you want to get your wife something nice and you have a couple of ideas (based on your initial reconnoiter, and to give her a sense of price range) and that you'd sure like some help. Know in advance your wife's size by checking out the labels in the clothes hanging in the closet.
Sale assistants almost always fall all over themselves trying to help men who seem a bit lost but well-intentioned. Seriously, I don't spend a lot of money, but by the time I'm done there are often 2-3 saleswomen helping me because they think it's so cute. It helps to go on a weeknight when they're not busy.
You'll end up with something nice, and even if the wife takes back everything (I always figure I'm buying barter, not clothing), she'll think you're awesome for the effort. I've gotten pretty good at this and have even branched out into buying dress shoes along with the ensemble. When other women compliment her, Mrs. PAC always says her husband picked out whatever she's wearing (not sure if this is due to pride or to deflect criticism). This results in the wrath of my quorum colleagues, but it's worth it.
Several years ago, I did something like this for our approaching anniversary. But I screwed up my courage and walked into Victoria's Secret. I was a bit embarassed and a bit unsure of how to shop for lingerie for my wife, and so shortly an attractive young sales assistant saw my plight and came to assist me.
She took 20 minutes or so showing me all sorts of sexy little underthings, answering questions, and generally trying to set me at ease. My wife seemed quite pleased with the result, and so was I.

Okay. That is not a "true gift" because most of it was for you...

In my mind, I'm imagining this went something like the scene from Christmas Vacation.

Shopping for lingerie is easy. I usually just take it off the rack and throw it on the floor.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
Genius...I mean I'll keep a running list but I'm doing good if I start by November. I am seriously going to try this for the Birthday/Mother's Day/Anniversary Routine this year. That one has rarely turned out well for me.
This is a good example of why I don't let Flash buy me clothing. Saleswomen are great at pawning off on unsuspecting men the unsightly stuff they know they won't be able sell to anyone else.
