As to Gidget's situation, she may not be bitter, but it seriously irks me that her parents have/had such a messed up view of debt and education. There is plenty that could have/should have been done to enable Gidget to finish her education. Her family just has little concept of the value of such. Though they did just help my brother-in-law with culinary arts school.
As Gidget said we won't be handing over a check when these kids turn 18. But we hope to have money set aside so that in the event they need some help we are able to without dipping into our own reserves. But as I stated before, the kids will have their own skin invested as well. I really hope they understand that an undergraduate degree isn't worth going into great debt for. I will encourage them to go to BYU if they want the going away to school experience. But otherwise I will encourage them to stay in state and possibly JUCO it for the first year at least."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

Now life is living hell around our house. She checks her e-mail 5-10 times a day waiting for anything from BYU. She knows that they most likely wont notify anyone until February, but she is a teenager so what can I say.
If any of you know anyone at BYU Admissions that has any pull, this would be a good time. I will up my tithing by 1% for her time enrolled in school to show my gratitude.
I have rarely seen her want something so bad. I even attempted to temper her expectations the other night while on our daddy/daughter date. I said "Kiddo...if BYU doesn't work out, at least you have the comfort of BYU-I to fall back on." The lazer beam look that I got from her 3/4 of the way through my comment almost ended my life.
I am the biggest BYU honk in the world, but this kid is out of control.

All they have been told is they will get an accepted/rejected by the 27th of Feb. Of course she is stoked about that.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI didn't hear from BYU until March I think. Sorry that doesn't help. But I also didn't get my application in until the last day they were accepted.
Who knows...kids.

Mini-Me has been accepted at BYU-I and has yet to hear from Provo, although he's a longshot. His ACT is slightly higher than the average, but his GPA (a tough course load, to be sure, but still) is around a 3 or 3.1. He's got all the other pluses (Eagle Scout, Duty to God, varsity sports, and his bishop loves him), but I'm doubtful the news will be good.
But he's fine with that. Three of his closest buddies from our previous ward are heading to Rexburg and, unlike your daughter, Tick, he's pretty excited about BYU-I. Despite my encouragement to come up with alternatives, he applied only to those two schools.
At least I'll get to hang out with RC Vikings.

What is the "shoe-in" ACT score for BYU these days? I mean, assuming your grades are in the won't hurt you category, what do you need to have on the ACT?Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I need to have him add her as a FB friend then. He can talk it up, and I can get Bishop Vandalay to sponsor a date between the two of them.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostMini-Me has been accepted at BYU-I and has yet to hear from Provo, although he's a longshot. Doctor or dentist? What about writer or artist?Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostCount me among the going-to-do-all-I-can-to-help-my-kids-through-life crowd. The whole Mormon sink-or-swim thing kills the dreams and potential of many people, and I fight it whenever I can.
Too many times someone doesn't get to be a doctor, dentist, or some other kind of professional because their parents won't help them and have also shackled them with the 'debt-is-poison' mantra so that they won't take out student loans, and they settle on a business degree and middle management.
I don't want my kids to ever have to settle because I chose not to help them and discouraged them from taking a financial risk. That's some wrong-headed <redacted>.
I agree with fus ... all of my siblings myself included paid their way. They are in order of birth:
Doctor
Lawyer
Artist
Nurse
Hospital Administrator
