Hang in there Tick.
It's even worse when you realize, after she is gone, that she will never really return to live. They only come back to visit.
God bless the inventor of Skype.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

She should have applied for UPS as well. I just saw that campus for the first time today and it is gorgeous.
Both are very good schools.
It is still a Tacoma address but it actually, Tick, in Parkland. UPS is a great school too. I was accepted there too. Beautiful. The Art dept. was great but I didn't get much out of the Education Dept. I went there because of the reputation and to also rub it into my brother because he could have gone on a wrestling scholarship but his grades weren't good enough.

Time to update...because I know everyone has been absolutely riveted:
BYU
BYU-H
BYU-I
CSU
ASU ACCEPTED
UofU ACCEPTED
USU ACCEPTED
UVU ACCEPTED
Weber St. ACCEPTED
PLU
Cal State Bakersfield
She just got the ASU notification in e-mail today. She called me really excited for it.
It has been a great joy and blessing in our family for her up to this point. Our youngest daughter is watching all of it and getting really excited for when she is older and gets to apply for college herself.
UofU had the nicest acceptance letter to date. Embossed and a foil logo.
USU had the funniest.
These schools are doing some really neat stuff on the recruiting end to get kids into the culture at their various schools.
We haven't been denied anywhere yet...just waiting for the letters to come in. BYU-H is 4 weeks from notifying, BYI-I is 7 weeks out, and BYU has until Feb. 27th to send out notifications. So we shall see.
Between the 3 BYU schools they get 15k incoming freshmen applications each year. Wowzers.

Weber State holds a dear place in my heart. After all, that is where I met and fell in love with MarkGrace.
Nevertheless, in the interest of full disclosure, Weber State (hand over heart out of respect) should probably be a last resort. It is very much a commuter school, and student life for a frosh would be pretty much non-existent compared to just about any of those schools (U of U being the only exception. It's a communter school too, folks. Sorry, just being honest!).
It's not that she couldn't make friends; she could and she would. But it just wouldn't be the same as having so many students in dorms/student housing close by. Unless things have changed drastically in the last 6 years, the dorms are full of exchange students from the Middle East and Asia. Great folks, but probably not who your daughter is going to identify with as an incoming frosh.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Hot Lunch told me basically the same thing in a text about Utah. He enjoyed his time there, but for in incoming freshman go elsewhere.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostWeber State holds a dear place in my heart. After all, that is where I met and fell in love with MarkGrace.

Weber would be last resort, but my dad lives in Clearfield so that makes it cheaper.

Her preference is BYU. Hawaii is 2nd on the list.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostHow cool The Tick. That is awesome news for your girl. Really an exciting time. Is she leaning one way or the other right now? Does she want to hear back from all schools before she decides? Is she really keen on going to Hawaii?
If she gets into the either BYU or BYU-H we have offered to help with college because that is in the budget.
If she chooses CSUB then we have offered to help pay for that also.
Anything that charges out of state tuition she knows she is on the hook for the price of college. That just isn't something that we can afford. But she has been made fully aware of this and will have to make the choice herself.
She wants to become a Psychologist.

9 years is lightning fast to get go through undergrad to PhD, so that's impressive. The average PhD in the US takes 7.9 years. I'm not sure where psychology lands, but I think most science/math PhDs don't take as long as those that require tons of writing and/or field work. There's a guy in the archaeology department that's been here for like 15 years.Originally posted by Space GhostLet your step-daughter know what's she is in for. Wife of Space Ghost received all of her psychology education from BYU: BS (Psychology major), 1995; MS, 1996, PhD, 2000. Nine years in total (including a one-year internship (which she did in Sherman Oaks). Then she had to work X amount of hours under someone else's license in the state of WA. Then she had to take WA state board exams (and pass). Then (finally) she could start her private practice in 2001, 12 years after she graduated from HS in 1989. (The math adds up if you include the time she served on an LDS mission).
She did love her Psychology graduate programs at BYU. The Psychology undergraduate program? Not so much... too many students in the major per teacher. If you step-daughter goes elsewhere for her BS, encourage her to apply to BYU for graduate school in Psychology.
cheers.

When you say psychologist, do you mean at the doctorate level, or a therapist at the masters level? Good for her!Originally posted by The_Tick View PostHer preference is BYU. Hawaii is 2nd on the list.

The latest update....
We were in panic mode helping our youngest daugther finish her science project yesterday when the phone rings...some lady asking to speak with my oldest daughter.
Hello, my name is "" and I am the Admissions advisor for PLU, we just wanted to congratulate you and let you know that you are one of the first people we are contacting about being accepted into the Freshman class of 2010. blah blah blah.
She talks with her for about 5 minutes and then hangs up. She runs and tells me, she runs and tells her mom. They both are jumping up and down and crying.
I start thinking of the tuition and I think of crying.
We are down to hearing from the last two. Actually 3 because she added Univeristy of Washington to the list. BYU is her #1 choice, with PLU being 2 and UW being 3.
Here is where we are at so far:
BYU
BYU-H DENIED
BYU-I ACCEPTED
CSU
ASU ACCEPTED
UofU ACCEPTED
USU ACCEPTED
UVU ACCEPTED
Weber St. ACCEPTED
PLU ACCEPTED
University of Washington
Cal State Bakersfield - Didn't finish the application. Doesn't want to go to school or live in California anymore.

Is BYU-H really hard to get into? It seems surprising that she would get denied from there. Also Washington and no Oregon? Speaks volumes.Originally posted by The_Tick View PostHere is where we are at so far:

It is definatly different.Originally posted by JohnnyLingo View PostWow, that's classy to call your daughter. I only ever got a letter from BYU.
She has gotten letters/e-mails from every school that has accepted her.
PLU...they have called her since the first Sunday after she started her application. Hi...how is the process going...we still need this, and this and this. Then the next phone call was from a Freshman gal working on campus. Telling our daughter about campus life, about Freshman dorm life, about the security level being safe for girls on campus.
Then the last 3 phone calls were all from someone in admissions telling her how good her essays were, and how her grades blah blah blah.
I can tell you that the admissions department at PLU is by far top notch. They have made my daughter feel like a million bucks. It has really swayed her opinion of attending the school from maybe...to maybe I should. My wife had such a good experience there that it helped.
