Well, setting aside the myriad scenarios in which an originator might need/want to take down a thread, there's simply no reason not to offer your users the option. The plain truth of the matter is that the users can't hurt the threads anyway. In cases of overzealous deletion, the mods could always restore the deleted threads. So unless there is reason to believe users would use the privilege irresponsibly, there's simply no legitimate reason to withhold the functionality, assuming it exists.

I beg to disagree, oh wise one, if you will climb down from your absolutist pinacle for a moment and consider another opinion:Originally posted by Babs View PostWell, setting aside the myriad scenarios in which an originator might need/want to take down a thread, there's simply no reason not to offer your users the option. it encourages epoepl to be responsible in what they start a thread about, to avoid stating somethign too personal, too embarrassing or too stupid. I want to see the baord govern itself, i dont want to have to worry about goign around and restoring a thread becasue somebody decided they really regretted starting a certain thread.
To be clear, this is just me speaking, I am only one member of the committee, and there is no indication that the majority of the committee necessariyl agrees wiht me. I know for a fact that some of them don't.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Wow. That's quite an opinion you have of your average user.Originally posted by creekster View PostI beg to disagree, oh wise one, if you will climb down from your absolutist pinacle for a moment and consider another opinion:

You realize that if there's anything we take away from this thread it's that the users were *already* operating under the assumption that this functionality existed? You really think that making that the case is going to make that much of a difference on the board?Originally posted by creekster View PostIts really the below average ones I am talking about, but yes, in general, I think this tends to make us ssave us from ourselves.

If that's all people manage to get out of this thread, then my opinion of the average user may be too high.Originally posted by Babs View PostYou realize that if there's anything we take away from this thread it's that the users were *already* operating under the assumption that this functionality existed?
I think whether or not this function existed is a real question. But it does not exist now and I am merely saying why I think that is the proper status. If anyone has a problem with something they posted and want ti deleted, they should let a mod know. But the easiest solution for that situation is to avoid posting it in the first place.
Again, just my solo opinion, YMMV.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Which users? Many of us didn't operate under the assumption that the ability to delete an entire thread existed, including myself. Maybe those who came from CG were, but those of us who came from CB certainly aren't used to having that ability.Originally posted by Babs View PostYou realize that if there's anything we take away from this thread it's that the users were *already* operating under the assumption that this functionality existed?Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

where is cowboy. he can clear all of this up right away.
Up until maybe 2 weeks ago (or less), if you started a thread, you could go to thread tools and click on an option to delete the entire thread. I know this for a fact.
Today, that functionality is now gone, at least via the thread tools drop down menu.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

A grand conspiracy is afoot. Now you just need to figure what one person in this thread is lying to you. Denver Bronco Crocs mail-ordered to your front door is your prize, if successful.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postwhere is cowboy. he can clear all of this up right away.

Why is anyone stuck on this? I believe you. I also believe JL and creek that they didn't touch it, at least intentionally (which does leave pelagius who is suspiciously silent, hmm......). I'm pretty sure that is admin setting, not a mod setting.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postwhere is cowboy. he can clear all of this up right away.

I think the question is whether we should. Let me ask you, in light of he idea expressed here that the contributions of others in a thread are sort of the "intellectual property" of both the author and the community, is there something insufficient about you just deleting your own post and asking a mod to kill any quoted material? I don't have a position here, I'm just trying to understand your practical concern. There may well be.

My understanding has always been the following :
A normal user cannot delete a thread they started in all fora except the speakeasy. A user can (and I believe still should be able to) delete threads they started in the speakeasy.
I didn't change anything and given what JL said I suspect this is still the case.Last edited by pelagius; 01-22-2010, 07:36 PM.
