Are we now not allowed to edit our own threads?

Cowboy recently brought to light our ability to edit our own threads.

Has that functionality since been removed?

I have not made any changes on the settings. I assume you are talking about how the thread gets deleted if the thread starter deletes the first post?

Yes. Where is that option again? I thought it was under thread tools.

No, you won't see an option under thread tools. But when you edit your post and elect to delete the post, the entire thread disappears.

I would encourage everyone to only do this in extreme circumstances. I would prefer that you simply edit your post. In some cases, there are many long replies in the thread where others have invested significant time and thought. If you would like some help hiding personal information in your post that has been quoted by others, ask a mod for help.

Lebowski, regular users aren't able to delete originating posts.

(Actually, to be honest, I have no idea. I'm simply extrapolating from my own privilege limitations.)

Yes they are. Or at the least, they have been able to do it in the past. It is a known issue with vBulletin. I have read articles (threads) about it on vbulletin.org.

Well, jsyk, we simply do not have that option in originating posts. It exists with regular posts, but it disappears if the post is originating.

It could just be me, though, perhaps I lost something in translation from mod to non.

I believe it's archived (so only the originator or a moderator can see it), but it shows in the forum list as "Thread deleted by [user]".

yes, I know, but is there any other non-mod user that can confirm that they currently have the ability to do this?

OK. I have done a little digging on the issue. First of all, I know for a fact that at one time in the past, users were able delete their own threads. There is an option in the admin cp for each user group titled: "Can delete own threads". It is currently set to OFF. I seem to recall that it was always OFF, but maybe not. Maybe I changed it at some point. With each passing year I become less and less confident in my memory. I also recall an article in vBulletin discussing this issue but... (see previous sentence).

Anyway, if you can no longer delete your own threads that is a good thing, IMO. If you want to make a case to delete a thread, send a PM to one of the mods.

This fits with my experience. I just didn't want Triplet lost in cyberspace, searching for nonexistent links.

guys, we were JUST able to do this less than a couple of weeks ago. Nobody remembers shutting it off over the past 14 days?

well, if I wanted to get rid of him, I'd probably send him searching for the golden fleece instead. On the offchance he actually found it, I'd demand an equal share of the profits.

Well I can guarantee you that I did not change anything over the past 14 days.
