He was great from about 1982-1987, but after that he was nothing special. He posted OPS+ during that period of: 142, 149, 149, 152, 121, and 157. Those are legitimately good to great seasons. He was great in 1986, but after that his career tanked and tanked hard. Since becoming a regular in the league he posted below average seasons in 1978, 1989, 1990, and 1991 (this is not considering his short seasons in 1992 and 1993). In a few years he was just average (from an OPS+ standpoint), 1979 (113), 1981 (101), and 1988 (106)

He ended up as a career 121 OPS+, not really that hall worthy.

I realize, I'm only focusing in on one stat but it isn't his defense that people are trying to push him in the hall on. He just wasn't great for a long enough period of time.
This would make a guy like Big Papi out of the HOF discussion as he was only great for 3-5 years. However unless a drug test shows up with him being positive I will be shocked if he doesn't have a bust one day.

Sorry to threadjack this baseball chat, but for some crazy reason I feel like redirecting the discussion and talking about tkh9.

tkh9, what brought you here? Without revealing too much personal info, what can you share? For those that are not aware of your status as Registered Weapon of Sexiness and well-kept hair, maybe you can start out with the basics.....married, kids, mission, etc.

Also, since we do tend to talk sports, it is not uncommon to list any and all sports affiliations....college football, hoops, NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, etc. We have a pretty healthy cycling forum here ("health" measured by post count, not average body mass), so if that floats your boat, by all means jump in.

One last thing....this board is food crazy. In fact, perhaps to the point of blatant word of wisdom violations. But if you love to eat food, talk about food, and even take rad digital pics of your food while you cook it, THIS IS THE RIGHT PLACE!

Anyhow, welcome again and hopefully you get comfy.

I would be surprised if Ortiz does end up in the Hall of Fame, even if he doesn't have a positive drug test. I actually think Dale Murphy has a lot better chance of making the hall. Ortiz's career offensive numbers are not nearly impressive enough to make up for the fact that he is of no value defensively.

Looking at Bill James Hall of Fame Standards it doesn't look good:

Black Ink: Batting - 16 (average Hall of Famer approximately 27)
Gray Ink: Batting - 75 (average Hall of Famer approximately 144)
Hall of Fame Monitor: Batting - 87 (likely Hall of Famer approximately 100)
Hall of Fame Standards: Batting - 27 (average Hall of Famer approximately 50)

        Compare that to Murphy
Black Ink: Batting - 31 (average Hall of Famer approximately 27)
Gray Ink: Batting - 147 (average Hall of Famer approximately 144)
Hall of Fame Monitor: Batting - 116 (likely Hall of Famer approximately 100)
Hall of Fame Standards: Batting - 34 (average Hall of Famer approximately 50)

Murphy has a much better case especially when you consider defense.

There is only one player in the hall with a primary position of DH, Paul Moliter. Ortiz won't be the 2nd. Edgar Martinez probably has a better shot.

I don't ever recall mocking your curly locks. I would have to guess that I was mocking your perm.

Thanks 3D. Married, kid on the way, served in Argentina.

BYU in all things college sports, NBA - Jazz, MLB - Braves, NHL - (The NHL is still around?), NFL - 49ers.

I do enjoy cycling. In terms of races, I don't follow them at all with the exception of the Tour de France. In terms of riding, I've been slacking big time, but I finally got my butt out of bed early and rode a bit this morning.

I'm not on par with the culinary level of this board, but based on my figure you could argue it's my favorite passtime.

As for the baseball chat, no worries. It's nice to see actual sports chat as opposed to living and dying over every move in recruiting, which I still can't believe anyone can enjoy.

Funk makes good points, but the hall doesn't apply criteria uniformly. So I'll stand by my biased BYU and Braves fan approach that the basis of his induction should be his back to back MVPs and 4 finishes in the top 10 of the MVP voting.

Whatever demerits I may have assigned to you in the past, you have more than made up for with this admission. I don't get it either.

All are welcome here. If it is barely edible or potable, it is worth discussing.

Also, you will feel right at home with your sports allegiances....there are several deluded Braves fans on this board!

You can do a lot better than that in making his case for the Hall of Fame. I have always thought that MVPs should be right above Golden Gloves and allstar games for consideration, in that they should never be considered. Funny that in Murphy's best season as a pro he didn't finish in the top 10 of the MVP voting.

I will say this much, Murphy is more deserving of inclusion in the hall than Jim Rice. If Rice is in, Murphy should be in too. I just don't like the watering down of the hall.
