Viking, an honest question that pertains somewhat to the undercurrent in this thread (and probably should be asked in a PM, you can answer in a PM): how long did it take you to 'get over' the church?

It is a very difficult transition to go from believing, life-long, uber-TBM member who was a Superhuman Missionary, to a person who just can't buy what the church is selling and who is uncertain about his belief in God? That transition away from the church has to be at least as painful as a divorce, but perhaps even more personal and certainly far longer lived than the breakup of a marriage. I can't even begin to understand how difficult it would be to 'tell the family' (especially TBM parents, siblings, or worse, elderly grandparents).

For most of us here, the church has been an intimate part of our lives for longer than we can remember. If we come to the decision that certain claims don't seem to be true, or that some things don't seem to add up or were exaggerated while other notable events were swept under the rug, or that the church leadership really doesn't seem to be in contact with the Divine, it can be heart-rending painful.

When I was a TBM I viewed most any little criticism of my view of the church as 'hateful anti-mormon speech', rather than evaluating the argument on its merits or checking facts at the primary source. It is true that there is a fair amount of hateful speech out there, but on some points of criticism the truth actually lies somewhere in between the church's claims and the claims of its critics.

People who have left the church and feel betrayed to some extent can act overly emotional and 'hateful' in their frustration. But so can those who remain faithful can lash out in equally hateful ways when they feel personally attacked by anybody who discusses some of the more troubling issues of church history.

In short, those who believe in Jesus (whether in the church or out of it) should treat people with compassion and Christ-like love. Those who don't believe in Jesus should treat people with an equivalent level of compassion and human kindness.
I really don't get this type of attitude. I'm sure that for many people, the realization (in their own minds) that the church is not what it claims is heart-rending, they feel betrayed, they find it difficult to get over. But I'm just as certain that many others don't find much difficulty leaving. Don't find it difficult to come to terms with their changed world-view. Don't feel betrayed.

More difficult than the breakup of a family? Certainly not for most people.

I think that most folks who are acting out with a lot of anger are in the throws of having problems with important relationships, or have lost them, as a result and they blame the church for it. I think this is the emotional state that leads people to a feeling of betrayal. There are some people who get genuinely upset at not having been told the truth, but like I say that typically happens in the context of other personal loss.

It looks like AC wasn't fooling. He's not been on here since 1/18.

This place has its way of sucking you back in, however.

I wonder who has done the "I am done" -> "I am back" routine the most times. You and viking would have to be right up there.

Don't forget tooblue. He also openly blamed SeattleUte.

Cougnine probably holds the record for fewest overall posts before going on everyone.

Space ghost has done the "I'm gone." hasn't done the "I'm back."

MikeWaters offered to leave for a year, putting it to a vote (i was the only one that voted for the full year). Then later he did leave on his own. Then he came back reincarnated as Al Pacino.
