We were the second group ever to be taught Malagasy in the MTC. Basic French taught in there (about two days total), but my comprehension comes from teaching educated Malagasys. Anyone in that country with more than a third-grade education was taught in French, and the more education they have, the more French they sprinkle in to their (predominantly) Malagasy conversations with us missionaries. Taught a guy with two bachelor's degrees and a Ph.D and he was about 45% French, 55% Malagasy. After teaching him for about three months my comprehension was excellent. Never was much good at speaking, though.Originally posted by Surfah View PostIn the MTC did you learn French or Malagasy?
I was also companions with one of the older missionaries who had been trained French and never really picked up Malagasy. Bilingual discussions were fun.

Welcome, John McClain. Pay no attention to JohnnyLingo; he's a bête de première classe.

I may be small, but I'm slow.
A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

I look forward to lots more of this kind of post from you. Less lecturing and more sharing. Very interesting.Originally posted by JohnnyLingo View PostWe were the second group ever to be taught Malagasy in the MTC. Interesting. My college roommate had to learn Malagasy in the field. Though I am not sure how much he picked up. I do know he spent most of his mission on Reunion which is more of a French resort IIRC.Originally posted by JohnnyLingo View PostWe were the second group ever to be taught Malagasy in the MTC. Johnny, as one who recognized that Mahana was worth eight cows when everyone else thought she was the ugliest woman on earth, certainly you can find it in your heart to see the value of an ornery attorney, even if he throws some French at you. I like to think I am like Mahana - ugly on the outside, creme puff (French intended) on the inside.Originally posted by JohnnyLingo View PostOrnery attorney who posts in other languages.
We will not be great friends.

Yes, it was the LTM when I was there as well - Knight Mangum Hall had so many memories for me, but it has gone the way of all the earth. As to your antipathy for lawyers, there are a lot of lawyers I don't like either!Originally posted by happyone View PostLTM young man, LTM
