  • Wong being shown the door at THS?

    http://www.deseretnews.com/m/article/865552117

Never knew the guy. The only thing that seems unusual to me from what was posted is his wife's plane ticket.

    Seems kinda odd.

It wasn't Wong's wife, it was the former principal's wife.

Yeah, he is toast. What a shame.

Sounds like a big part of the problem was the former principal, George Bayles. Doesn't surprise me. I know some other things the guy has done. I was thrilled when he retired last year. Now it looks like he will reach back from beyond retirement and abuse us some more.

Some folks in the district have had it in for Wong for a long time. I'd bet the irregularities are similar to what happens in every high school football program. I feel bad for the guy.

I know nothing about the situation, but reading the article my first thought was why arent they talking more about the former principal. It sounds like he was the problem.

This is a problem...I have a board exam tomorrow that I should be studying for and all I want to do is waste time on the Internet reading about the game last night. I'm still very excited. My FIL was mad at me this morning because I didn't wake him when the team started the comeback. I'm so glad I stayed up; after so many years of disappointing late nights yelling at the TV, it was nice to see the guys pull it off.

I've heard this from a couple of sources, why are some people out to get him?

Total speculation...suppose your kid was all-farrer as a QB and you are expecting greatness, similar to Mr Timpview, Brett Engeman. How happy would you be to see that some kid who lives in Lone Peak boundaries ends up being the starting QB? You see the cards crumbling and try to point fingers at everybody but the person actually responsible.

High schools that build these little programs like Timpview football, Lone Peak basketball, etc, seem really odd to me.

It doesn't make sense to me that this would fit within the goals of a high school, and especially a school district, which makes the decision for a high school.

Recruiting, money, facilities. The usual stuff. Timpview is top-flight in every way with cash to burn. On the flip side Provo High is in a much tougher spot. This ticks off a lot of the leaders on the Provo side of things.

So from a school district, perspective, how does this fit?

For example, I was at Mountain View for a game. There is a loud buzzing in their gym due to bad lights. I asked a parent about it. They said the school district won't approve funds to buy new lights. Mountain View's athletic programs used to be very good, now they are in shambles. They just hired a nobody for their new basketball coach.

Meanwhile, Orem High, a few blocks away and managed by the same school district board has all new facilities and just hired two high profile coaches for their BB and FB programs.

I also wonder why everyone has it out for Wong. Seems like his facilities are upgraded with contributions and fundraisers.

Here's an old article on something similar:

                              http://www.deseretnews.com/article/6...rows.html?pg=1

Publicly, many coaches are loathe to talk about recruiting; they don't want to come across as crybabies, says one.
Privately, they can't see each other without talking about it. The touchy topic arises "every time we get together, whether it's a region meeting or a casual meeting," said Kearns High coach Doug Bills, president of the Utah High School Football Coaches Association.
In Bills' estimation, it's not so much coaches recruiting players as parents shopping schools.

Bills counted 11 players living within the Kearns boundaries on rival Hunter High's sideline during a lopsided loss this season. "You don't mind getting beat," he said, "but you hate getting beat by your own kids."

Recent rumors have Cate putting players' families up in Cottonwood-area condos and paying off the mortgage for a transfer student's mother. Such things he said, would get him in trouble with the IRS.
