OK, a little odd that both Utah and Pitt jumped us. But they were in whether they were behind or ahead, so that makes no difference. Nor will it affect the final rankings; if they win their games they would end ahead, and if they lose they probably end behind.

Really, the only surprise that matters at all is that UTSA is going to Frisco instead of the Independence Bowl. Too bad; we'd have had a matchup of ranked teams and arguably a decent little game.

In the end, the postseason access piece is the one element of Independence where BYU simply never made much progress. Oh well. That problem fixes itself two seasons from now.
Not surprised, except for both Utah and Pitt jumping us. But now I will not be surprised at anything next year. Like you say it doesn't matter in terms of access, the results and invites are the same. But the committee made a pretty naked attempt to cover the fact that the ACC and PAC12 are shit conferences this year by boosting their champions into the top 12 in the last rankings. I mean, the PAC12 has been shit for a while and everyone has figured it out. For example, that's why going 5-0 against them doesn't buy us a whole lot and their TV deal is woefully uncompetitive. USC under Pete Carroll and then Oregon under Chip Kelly fooled everyone into forgetting that the PAC hasn't been a decent conference with multiple contenders since the early 80s.

Anyway I am obviously insanely jealous of the Rose Bowl bid and it is a great accomplishment for Utah. Props to them for finally walking through the wide open door to the PAC12 championship instead of stepping on a rake. Better do it again next year because the door closes for a while after that.

Same. Kind of disappointing, but man I hope they destroy SDSU. That really is a loathsome program.

      • I thought I read the winner of Conference USA gets to choose what bowl they go to. If true, I hope UTSA gets destroyed by SDSU.

Be careful. The team that’s happiest to be there often wins the bowls. Many upsets.

Agreed. But I think they can over an 8-pt spread. Alas, I am sure it is the other way around.

Yeah, I read the same. Basically they opted for a lower payout to go to the closer game (and face SDSU instead of BYU).

Lame that UTSA wanted to avoid BYU in favor of playing in a 20k seat soccer stadium instead.

                • Ranking of all the bowl games:

                  13. Independence Bowl: (13) BYU vs. UAB

Dec. 18, 3:30 p.m. -- Listen, any time you can watch BYU, you should do it. If life were fair, the Cougars would be in the Rose Bowl because they went 5-0 against the Pac-12 this season, including a 26-17 win over Pac-12 champion Utah. Instead, the Cougars must settle for the Independence Bowl, but the good news is that UAB provides an intriguing matchup for them.

The Blazers have been one of the better C-USA programs for years, and this year was no exception. While UAB failed to win the West for the first time since 2017, it wasn't because they weren't good enough, just that UTSA was better. The Blazers have a strong defense led by linebackers Noah Wilder (86 tackles) and Alex Wright (six sacks, 8.5 TFL), and it will be up to both of them to rein in BYU running back Tyler Allgeier, who rushed for 1,414 yards and 20 touchdowns this season.
