  • Also I think they will wait until after the first CFP rankings are released to decide on adding games. Despite the hand wringing above, we are nearly guaranteed a NY6 bid if we beat SDSU. If we don't enter the CFP rankings in the top 8, there is no reason to risk that bid by adding another game.

If by some miracle we do enter in the top 8, making a run at a once in a lifetime playoff berth should be considered.

The Rose and Sugar host the semi-finals this year. In years they don't host the semifinals, they get the champion of their contracted leagues (Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) or, if that league's champion is in the playoff, the second-place team. Since the Rose and Sugar are hosting the semifinals this season, no second-place team from those conferences is required to be selected. There is a similar arrangement for the Orange and the ACC champion which is in force for this season. I think you may be right that the Orange Bowl also takes the best available from SEC/Big10/ND.

So if the playoff has Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Notre Dame, then I believe the only other automatic bids are the Big 12 champ (let's assume Oklahoma), the Pac-12 champ (Oregon), the highest-ranked G5 champ (Cincinnati), and an ACC team (Miami) and best of SEC/B10/ND (Texas A&M) for the Orange Bowl. That's nine spots, leaving 3 at-large positions which, based on the current AP poll, would be Florida (6), BYU (8), and Northwestern (11).

If Florida loses in the SEC title game, I expect them to drop below an undefeated BYU.

As for the undefeated Pac12 teams, dont they have a title game? I'm not expecting any more than one undefeated Pac12, which is already accounted for (Oregon).

In short, if the committee ranks things substantially similar to the AP, BYU's in a pretty good spot for an at-large NY6 bid.

Looks like you may be right. My bad. I feel a lot better now.

If I said there would be more than one Pac12 undefeated team, it was my mistake. There can only be one undefeated Pac12 team (although there could be multiple one loss Pac12 teams).

      • Yeesh. BYU is being eviscerated on social media and by national sports writers. Even if this initial narrative is misleading and corrections are written, this will stick to BYU and it will hurt.

Not all national writers are following this false narrative. Pete Thamel reporting that if BYU can get a guaranteed game locked in, they want to play. Which I believe is the truth.

Completely sleazy move by the PAC 12 to a) strong-arm BYU into taking a game on their borderline ridiculous terms, b) throw shade on a team currently ranked above their eventual champion, which will have to jump BYU to enter into playoff discussion. Bush league doesn’t begin to describe it. Sad to say not all will recognize it for what it is and BYU will get hit for it.

              • Holmoe needs to hop on the media circuit tomorrow morning and clear this up. He should be trying to get on every morning sports show on ESPN and Fox.

“We said we would play UW if they would guarantee the game wouldn’t get yanked for another P12 team. They balked. We’re not going to ask our players to sacrifice their TG so they might get to play. Like many schools, we are facing a budget deficit. We’re not going to send our equipment bus to Seattle only to be told “oops, nevermind”.

Frustrating that media toolbags like Gilmore and Mandel are perpetrating the UW narrative and saying that BYU should jump through any and all hoops to play.

Meh ... if BYU schedules 2 more games, this will be a complete nothing burger. Hopefully it happens and with teams better than UW. They aren't even ranked.

That's what Holmoe seemed to be saying during the halftime interview - that they wanted to see the committee rankings before determining what, if any, games to schedule.

                    • why not take the offer? It only costs money if they forfeit. Say UW arranges to play Utah at the last minute— BYU will still be considered as willing to play any team, any where, any place. Thay will get a bounce for being unafraid to do it. Pac12 will look like jackasses for scheduling, then cancelling, their 4th game against BYU this season.

Any team, any where, any place...depending on where we are in the rankings.

Why TF should byu accept a maybe game from the PAC that can be pulled within 48 hours of kickoff when they have other options?

There's this thing called Thanksgiving on Thursday and some players have already gone home out of state since no game was scheduled for this week. Don't want to force those players to come back unless there will definitely be a game to play.

                              • This confirms people's priors and the whole playoff/NY6 selection process is overseen by subjective committee members. Tom openly says we'll wait until we see what the committee rankings are before we consider adding games, someone involved in the Washington side of the negotiations thinks BYU isn't acting in good faith and leaks a narrative. Tom should have just shut up.
