I'll bet he gets lots of opportunities at Cougar Club luncheons. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I will admit I haven't attended one of those in a couple of years. However, the ones I went to prior to that were a lot better than what I was hearing in the media and some fans interpretation.

I especially liked him saying although integrity and something else I can't remember, come ahead of football, he realizes unless you win all that talk about integrity and high values doesn't have much credibility. That's great. If his values talk means a lot to him, he realizes the only way to get the message out is to win and not just gimme MWC games.

Honestly, this is one of the big reasons why I think it's critical that BYU has a successful athletics program. I regard the gospel as a sort of guide to long-term success. I don't believe in a theological world view that condemns mankind to failure and misery in this life in the hopes of good times in the world to come. I'm not necessarily of the "magic happens" camp, where God frequently and constantly intervenes and disrupts the flow of nature to watch out for his kids, but I believe that success and happiness are often the natural result of living according to principles of the gospel (such as honesty, loving one's neighbor, etc).

If BYU had to choose between keeping the commandments and poor performance or quitting athletics altogether, it sends a big message to members of the church (and to the world, for that matter) that the principles of the gospel are incompatible with success. I don't believe that is true in sports, in business, in law, or in any field.

Wow. What a FUN read. This kind of entertainment is seriously priceless.

Too many things to respond to, to actually formulate a response. So I figure I'll just leave it at that since I'm jumping in late.

I have to say, watching the ute fans get their panties wadded makes me love Bronco all the more.

I won't deny that Bronco isn't perfect. No coach is - they'll all have their moments saying something stupid. Hell, we all will if you stick around long enough and give us the chance. Most of us don't do it with a microphone or recorder in our face...but that's a separate issue.

I'll just say that I like more of what Bronco says than I dislike.

You make a good point. I think you and I need to hang out sometime. Too bad I won't be heading out to the NYC for a while.

Well, neither will I, but I will be going to Chicago in late September.

Oh brother. Get out the boots. It's about priorities. Sometimes you really do sound immature. Should BYU also have the best scouting degree? Oops; it does. ... I'll find another example. Does BYU have to be the best at hacky sack? Some schools like Univerity of Chicago have concluded that while athletic excellence is important and will be encouraged in school programs, there are aspects of DI sports that are contrary to their mission and/or distracting.

Everything that's wrong with BYU is because of its excessive enmeshment with the LDS Church, or, as you put it, "the Gospel."

I wonder how the integrity base would have reacted if he had said, "some LDS kids just don't like the overbearing, controlling, babysitting atmoshpere that is here at BYU."
Someone told me that a LB for the U commented that their motto was 'fast and nasty." What is ours? 'return with honor'? I agree with 71 here, give me some friggin mean, nasty and arrogant football players over a bunch of fireside speakers.

Not necessarily "the best." "Successful." Sometimes, that may mean that you field a team so great that they win the national championship. It doesn't mean that each loss is indicative of failure to live by the church's teachings.

If the church is going to sponsor a University, it may as well do a good job of it. At any rate, my guess is that you don't think it's appropriate for the church to be sponsoring a University anyway. If that assumption is incorrect, let me know, and we'll continue the dialog.

And yes, some schools, such as the University of Chicago, have decided to focus their efforts on certain pursuits consistent with their mission. More power to them. I don't think BYU should so marginalize itself.

This thread cannot be half the fun that watching Bronco make silly statements is. If we Ute fans have any problem with our underwear because of Bronco, it's because we are trying not to laugh it off our rear ends after yet another episode of Bronco in self-parody.
