            • Imagine if Mangum had thrown to Talon Shumway on this play.

There are things I think BYU could do to give their football program a chance to close that gap such as pay their coaches more money and continue to make the HC less an impediment to success. I think there have been commitments on the HC front but I just don't think BYU will ever be willing to pay what it will take to attract the caliber of coaching they will need across the board. This is unfortunate because I think this is the one thing that BYU can control that would have the biggest impact. However, even if BYU does these types of things I am not convinced it will change their trajectory significantly. Without BCS or P5 inclusion I think conference affiliation vs independence and all of these other issues are window dressing. It would be nice for the fanbase for their to be more faith/trust in the administration that convinces the masses of BYU's commitment to competing at the highest levels but the reality is BYU is not willing to do that. The reconciliation process that the fanbase must go through between the expectations of highest levels and the performance is ebbing enthusiasm little by little. The only thing that BYU has in its favor is the hope that perhaps the current revenue structures are unsustainable over the long term and that enough other programs will return to BYU's level and thus make the playing field more even.

Who are all these LDS head coaches and top-notch assistant coaches BYU is unable to hire because of low salaries? If there is any coaching limitation, it is the LDS membership requirement, at least for the head coach.

                • I mentioned this play in the Tanner Mangum thread, about Mangum's trajectory likely hitting the lineman in the helmet if he doesn't raise his arms. From this angle, though, it wouldn't have mattered if the DL hadn't touched it - the LB was going to pick it off and take it to the house anyway.

Tanner has got to stop locking in on his receivers. He needs to look off the safeties (and the LBs and DLs). if Tanner looks off Hifo, the LB had vacated the middle, leaving Trinamman open for a first down +.

That is a challenge but if the HC could have a much bigger budget for assistants I am guessing things would improve.

The free safety was headed over there until he saw the pass on its way.

Looks like he's moving back, but not necessarily moving to one side or the other (hard to tell with him going out of frame for a second). Probably would have been enough to catch Shumway, but not until after a long gain.
