But to answer your questions I don't know what BYU pays I just think that in BYU's unique circumstances one of the only things they could do for the benefit of their football program is to jump feet first into the assistant coaches salary arms race. I don't believe they are doing that not only because of the anecdotal evidence of Empey and Cahoon but because I just tend to believe that paying an assistant FB coach unseemly amounts of money is something that I believe would be offensive to a great many people involved in the decision making process. My point is not that BYU is behind or unfair just that if BYU wants to compete with Utah, a program that is becoming a solid mid tier PAC 12 program, overpaying assistants is one thing that is under their control. If the old OL Coach is making a million at Auburn or wherever he is, then offer him more is my point. Perhaps BYU is doing the best it can with its financial resources available.
Got it. I could see the BOT wanting to keep the appearance of financial propriety, but I'm sure the intellects in the Marriott School of Business can come up with some theory to justify it.

And, if they are really underpaying their coaches based on the revenue they bring in, how would the fan base put pressure on the administration?
You guys are missing the issue. Public universities like Utah, and probably private schools, pay DI football coaches competaitive salaries mostly with private donations earmarked specifically for that purpose. (This is why hiring and firing is never really the AD's decision, even though they act like it.) Maybe the LDS Church doesn't want to raise money for that purpose because at least in theory it may reduce gifts for prosecuting the Lord's work. But doesn't BYU have any high roller unbelieving fans?

I thought BYU had an endowment for this too. Coaches circle or something like that.

What are we considering "private donations?" PAC-12 revenue? Or just Spence?

                    • Trying to figure out one of Dave Rose's bullet points:

                      7818 record in conference (81.3%)

                        78-18 = 96 games

                        78/96 = .8125 = 81.25%. Rounding up to 81.3%

                        Did I miss something?

Ok. That would mean the stats are about 6 years old then.

If I counted right, his current conference record is 151- 49 (76%)

It was kind of strange post game when Kyle told the reporter "that is a really well coached team" referring to BYU. I'm used to him being more of a dick.

He was a dick last year too, when he said we're cheap shot artists because we're coached to be that way.
