They do not screw around with their football in Alabama. There aren't any major league teams, so it's the Tide and Tigers 365 days a year.Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostYeah...... Have you ever talked to people from Alabama about that games? We think the hatred in this state is bad. I know many of us have had similar experiences that I'm about to share.
I've a good non-LDS Friends that lived back east most of his life...he grew up there and moved to a few different states during that time,,,,NYC, Florida, Alabama and Georgia.
Then he spent grad school in Texas. Like many of us he's a college football fanatic.
Then he moved to Utah about 6 years ago.....and to say he was shocked at the level of intensity in the BYU/Utah rivalry is putting in mildly. He always used to make fun of me because people "in this state don't know what REAL passionate football is about."
While it's true this state isn't exactly known for football being on the obsessive level like it is in Texas and many parts of the South, the rivarly here is pretty dang good.
This is a guy who'd been to Alabama/Auburn, Ole Miss/Arkanasa, OSU/Michigan, USC/UCLA, Texas/OU, Clemson/South Carolina and Florida State/Miami.....he ended up going to the 2006 rivalry game here and last years game again....he said the only atmosphere where he saw more passion/hatred/competitive spirit was at the Alabama/Auburn game.
And like many who've ended up experiencing this rivalry up close says..."it's the best rivalry in the country that not enough know about, but would be very impressed like I was, if they found out about it."

Obvious choice for #1. Perhaps now you people can understand the tension that arises occasionally between Babs and me."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

What a curious list.
He emphasizes that this is a ranking of rivalries that are hot right now....then proceeds to list SC/fucla......with the bruins losing about 8 of the last 9 years. Adding to the strangeness, he disqualifies SC/Notre Dame (even though it has way more national appeal) because it hasn't been competitive lately.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I will say perhaps for the 40th time, that, as an Alabama alum the Holy War is a much, much more intense game atmosphere and the dislike is more genuine than for the Iron Bowl.Originally posted by RockyBalboa View PostI know many of us have had similar experiences that I'm about to share.

All of the pageantry and the commercialization of the Iron Bowl is off the charts in comparison to the Holy War. I sat in the student section and people would show up to the games dressed in full Auburn regalia and get virtually no harrassment let alone threats of physical violence. That does not happen in SLC. It probably would not happen most of the time in Provo.
My two cents from attending 4 Iron Bowls and 12 or so Holy Wars.

It has to do with the religious hatred. I can't think of another rivalry that is less about the game, and more about the fan bases. Many of those people only come out of the woodworks for rivalry week, then they disappear from the athletic realm. Personally, I wish they would stay home.Originally posted by New Mexican Disaster View PostI will say perhaps for the 40th time, that, as an Alabama alum the Holy War is a much, much more intense game atmosphere and the dislike is more genuine than for the Iron Bowl.

The game itself is compelling enough for the rivalry to be good(especially the last 20 years), we don't need the other element."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

In 1994 after Arizona blew their chance to go to the rosebowl Solon and I were at the Ariz st v UCLA game (in tempe) that night. As we were walking up the stands all the people were saying.... "Arizona... STILL the ONLY Pac-10 team to never go to the rosebowl"Originally posted by RockyBalboa View PostWhen I lived in Mesa, I was surprised at the lack of caring by so many for the Arizona/Arizona State games. I rarely ran into anyone who was absolutely passionate about it while living there.
That rivalry falls under the overated category for me."Be a philosopher. A man can compromise to gain a point. It has become apparent that a man can, within limits, follow his inclinations within the arms of the Church if he does so discreetly." - The Walking Drum

Arizona is actually the only P10 or B10 school to never go to the Granddaddy.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostIn 1994 after Arizona blew their chance to go to the rosebowl Solon and I were at the Ariz st v UCLA game (in tempe) that night. It is pretty pathetic when Harvard, Columbia, and Navy have more Rose Bowl games and wins under their belts than your school.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Before we weep for Arizona, don't forget they've only been in the Pac 10 about 30 years.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostArizona is actually the only P10 or B10 school to never go to the Granddaddy.

True, but so has ASU and they came within a David Boston TD catch of probably winning the national championship.Originally posted by Mr. Crimson View PostBefore we weep for Arizona, don't forget they've only been in the Pac 10 about 30 years."There's no such thing as someone who used to be a Raider fan.
