Thanks to all for the comments. It was a great day. The Army uniforms are based upon those worn by the 82nd Airborne Division - nicknamed the All American division because it had soldiers representing every US State- when they parachuted into France on D-Day. They jumped into a village named Saint-Mere-Eglise and the village was decimated in the battle including the village Catholic Chapel. Before it was destroyed there was a stained glass window with Angels represented. When WWII ended the villagers rebuilt their Church to include the stained glass window and they once again put angels in the window...This time the angels were US Army Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne with parachutes attached. I hope you all enjoyed the greatest annual amateur athletic event in the world. I enjoyed it more than I had in a very long time.

Says he almost got kicked out of West Point several times for different "spirit missions". Said at one point he stole an MP car and drove it all over campus as a distraction to keep his plebes out of trouble. Said he did 170 punishment tours ( thin that what he called them) and that he was a century man. Said he loved/hated his time at West Point. My brother and I stayed in a little inn (hotel 6th of June) about 500 meters or so from the church in St. Mere Eglise when we visited Normandy in '08. The church still has a paratrooper hanging from the steeple (a manaquin of course) There is also quite a nice museum right across the court yard from it. IMHO, if you ever get a chance the Normandy Beeches are a must see. My current avatar is a picture I took on Utah Beech on that trip.

I wonder if the museum includes the memorabilia of Elwood von Siebold, a D-Day tour director who owns what was the mayor's house in WWII across the town square from the church. He took us on a tour with another couple who were commanders in the USN (she was over the Mediterranean Fleet). At the end of the tour, he said he didn't usually do this but he took us up to his huge attic, a personal museum which included a couple dozen mannequins wearing the uniforms of both sides during the war, along with a literal arsenal of weaponry (my fave was an MG 42). A great tour and an excellent day. I esp. loved the Pointe du Hoc and the American Cemetery.Originally posted by happyone View PostComment
