The point of telling that story at USU is to play to the crowd. Regardless of whether BYU has any future plans to play USU (and I think they should, I would rather see that game even on a home/away rotation than the Southern Illinois of the world), the Aggie fan base considers BYU a big rival.

They don’t just see us as a rival, they openly hate BYU because they think that BYU students/football players/administrators think they are holier than the aggies. I have an Aggie brother and just three weeks ago I was visiting him and he spent three hours demeaning BYU. Near the end of the conversation I made a light hearted jab at the Aggie’s, to which he got incredibly offended and again brought up my holier than thou attitude. I’ve gotten to where I won’t even talk about any sports at all with him because every comment that even remotely says anything bad about USU is taken as me putting myself on a pedestal. The funny thing is that I like USU and will chear for them to do well unless they are playing BYU.

I bet the Aggie faithful are eating up Broncos comments.

He was responding to a question that directly asked why he didn’t play for Edwards at BYU. He just told his story, one that BYU fans already heard almost 20 years ago. I don’t see it as a big deal.

In experience of living in Logan for many many years, sports is not as central to the university and community as it is in the Wasatch Front. It seemed like most of the student body were not sports people or had primary fandom in BYU or UofU (more UofU fans). Being a BYU fan wasn't very polarizing. However, I haven't been there in well over a decade so maybe the culture has changed.

I would prefer not playing them as well. Mostly because I don't hate them and keeping them apart makes that easier.

As long as you don’t expect him to stick around to the end of his contract, I suppose this is true.
