He'll be fine. I think his body of work shows that his rivalry week prep is bullshit, though.
#boohoos. The thread for stupid crap about Bronco Mendenhall and co.

Coach Bronco's seat getting warm already.
Doughty: Football culture to change at UVa ... maybe
There were times when the program had almost a Mickey Mouse Club feel to it. The players had to earn their numbers, a possible turnoff for recruits, although Mendenhall later described the experience as “one of the most memorable” of his career.
Seldom a discouraging word was heard, and Mendenhall began many news conferences by saying how much he liked his players. However, attendance lagged as UVa made a habit of playing competitively for two or three quarters, then collapsing.
That’s just one of the habits UVa might want to avoid as part of the new culture.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

Bronco needs to turn his public persona back to being a badass. This softy, feely, crowd surfing after a win guy isnt him.
Also, I'm not sure his schtick is as effective with non-LDS players.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Today I noticed that I was still following Garrett Tugujae on Twitter. Of course I deleted him because f$@& him. Anae, Atuaia, Beck, Tugujae, Poppinga- did Bronco have to leave the cupboard so bare? Especially since BYU has to hire LDS coaches? And then I remember that Nick Howell went too, and I think, "ok it's worth it."

Each of the assistants are taking their 2 year 300% bump in salary (2 yrs because Bronco & Co will likely not be coaching at UVA in 2018) and finding homes in Utah Valley commiserate with their future income at BYU at half their current salary. It's a master plan to get BYU to pay their assistants at least half of what they'd make at a terrible P5 school. Evil geniuses.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostToday I noticed that I was still following Garrett Tugujae on Twitter. Of course I deleted him because f$@& him. One of the best things about Bronco moving on to UVa is that it has seriously cut back on the number of pro-Bronco defenders using the "bash Dave Rose" strategy to defend him. I never understood that, but it was a favorite tactic. That said, I liked Bronco ok. It just annoyed the crap out of me when Rose was brought into the argument.

Not sure what you are talking about, but I do recall BYU71 and others claiming that BM coached the way he did (firesides, etc.) because he had been directed to do so by BYU/Church HQ. I used to argue that if that were the case, why do we not see Dave Rose doing the same thing?Originally posted by BlueK View PostOne of the best things about Bronco moving on to UVa is that it has seriously cut back on the number of pro-Bronco defenders using the "bash Dave Rose" strategy to defend him. Well, Kalani has pretty much settled that question. That was BM all the way."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I didn't see that argument much here because this is a more intelligent site. It was VERY common on cougarboard. It went like this:Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostNot sure what you are talking about, but I do recall BYU71 and others claiming that BM coached the way he did (firesides, etc.) because he had been directed to do so by BYU/Church HQ. Poster A: Bronco is a terrible coach, or some other negative thing
Poster B: No he isn't!
Poster A: Yes he is (uses something to make the point)
Poster B: Well, Dave Rose does the same thing, only worse!
Poster A: We're not talking about Dave Rose
Then poster B starts an entirely new thread attacking Rose.Last edited by BlueK; 01-12-2017, 03:09 PM.

Bronco cleaned things up and paved the way for Kalani's mellow existence. When Bronco was interviewing he was given some pointed suggestions on how to accomplish the cleanup. Bronco then injected religion, accountability, and business principles into the program. Several years later he was a success but many, mostly on CB, were tired of the head coach as a bishop approach.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostNot sure what you are talking about, but I do recall BYU71 and others claiming that BM coached the way he did (firesides, etc.) because he had been directed to do so by BYU/Church HQ. If a Kalani had replaced Crowton then I don't think you see the same version of Kalani.

From what I hear, in Bronco's interviews he laid out his vision of how a BYU coach should operate. Then he was hired, therefore he assumed he had a mandate. That is a little different from being told what to do.
Either way, he wasn't micromanaged like some folks argued. You can see him do some of the same stuff back at UVa. It's his schtick."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

It was a combination of the two. Believe it or not pre-BYU Bronco was a different cat. A big part of Bronco's BYU persona was acting in a way that met the expectations at the time. It makes sense that he would apply the principles that brought him success at BYU to the VA job.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThat is one way to spin it.

Bronco is good coach and had a difficult job taken over for Crowton. I believe he's underappreciated.

What makes you think that? Do people here not appreciate what he did for the program? Just because they point out some of his faults doesn't mean he isn't appropriately valued.Originally posted by Shaka View PostIt was a combination of the two.
