Buyout was set to halve Oct 1, so I figured he would be fired at 12:01 am that day. Word is donors cut checks last night to get him out immediately. It is definitely time. I had an emotional attachment to Frost because he was a couple years ahead of me in school. I remember watching him dominate both hurdle races and the shot put at the state track meet and making noise at tiny Wood River High School. His his homecoming to Nebraska to win Osborne his last NC in his last season cemented him as a legend. All husker fans desperately wanted him to be the one but it just isn't going to work
Another former Husker QB, Mickey Joseph, takes over as interim head coach. He split time with two other QBs in the late 80s and early 90s. That group gave way to Tommie Frazier and the 90s dynasty.
Who knows if Nebraska will ever be "back". I have noted before that I look to the south to our former respected rival Oklahoma and wonder how they have kept it going for 70 years except for a brief drop in the 90s (which coincided with Nebraskas best ever run). Kids don't want to go to Norman any more than they want to go to Lincoln as far as a great college town. Nebraska was right there with Oklahoma in terms of their overall place in the cfb world until they fired Solich in 2003. In my mind we have never recovered from that and the steps taken since to try to get back. But Nebraska has fan support second to none in the country, they have the money and facilities to compete with anyone. I really believe they just have to find the right coach. But like a 5x divorcee, maybe I need to look in the mirror and stop saying everyone we choose is the problem.
Thanks for coming to my depressing TED Talk.

Yeah, it is sad to see Nebraska has fallen so far. In the Tom Osborn era they were the gold standard. I can't help to wonder if it has to do with recruiting and not being able to attract talent out of Texas, etc. like they use to.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View PostBuyout was set to halve Oct 1, so I figured he would be fired at 12:01 am that day. Lived by the partial qualifiers, died without them? Don't Nebraska fans blame Texas for that as well?Originally posted by Uncle Ted View Post

The Texas recruiting woes for Nebraksa is a myth, mostly perpetuated by people who claim you can't win without getting Texas talent or Texas fans who want to claim everyone's problems stem from them not loving Texas and wanting to be with them. The reality is the 90s championship rosters averaged 4 players from Texas and had no real Texas stars unless you count the kicker. What Nebraska did do in recruiting before firing solich was:Originally posted by Uncle Ted View Post

1. Signed ALL the nebraska blue chip talent.
2. Turned lesser ranked nebraska talent into superstars in the power I option system. Mostly linemen. Their walk-on program was legendary.
3. Recruited California very well for a cold weather school in a smaller city in the middle of the country. The monster defenses in the 80s and 90s had heavy contributions from California.
4. Landed some good talent from florida. I believe the big 8 orange bowl connection aided with this.
5. The New Jersey pipeline
My theory on what went wrong recruiting wise is Nebraska tried to change their identity to a spread team and that cut against the kind of talent they historically recruited and elevated. Add the move to the Big Ten and it only got worst. When they went to the Big Ten they should have leaned into their power running roots with some tweaks around the edges. As the California recruits diminished in the Big Ten they could have solidified New Jersey and made inroads elsewhere in tbe Midwest with a power run game while still getting occasional stars from Florida and the rest of the south. I'm not saying we have to be a triple option team but we should be trying to play more like Wisconsin and Iowa than the Raiders of the early 2000s or UCF.Last edited by Omaha 680; 09-11-2022, 12:47 PM.

Especially after paying Georgia Southern $1.4mm to come and beat them in Lincoln and paying $7mm+ to fire Frost before the end of the season. That was an expensive game.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

Would be nice to have karma swing Nebraska's way with a victory over Oklahoma this week but it won't happen. Part of me wishes for an old-fashioned Sooner beat down where OU essentially names the final score. It is easier to endure that result than a game where OU plays poorly and Nebraska plays lights out only to lose in the final moments.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

Honestly, the number of single digit Nebraska losses is recent years is mind-boggling. Like, it seems statistically impossible. I can't imagine what that must be like as a fan.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View Post

They played Oklahoma tight last year in Norman with a worse Nebraska team. The game was finally iced by one of the greatest interceptions ever made. Would not shock me at all to see Nebraska pull off an upset.Originally posted by Pelado View Post
