Of course. And the site you linked supports my anecdote. Nebraska ranked 6 spots ahead of Utah for civil engineers' salary and 21 spots ahead for COL adjusted civil engineers' salary. Cool site, BTW.

Yeah, it is a fun time-waster. Some surprising results there. For example, some medical careers in Utah (family practice) are near the top and some are near the bottom (nurse anesthetist). I imagine the wide variation spawns lots of anecdotes.

Cahoon was talking about the value of going to school at BYU for people who want to be in Utah - and specifically about the networking opportunities with other players, fans, etc. So his summary was that a BYU degree benefits someone more who plans to live in Utah.

          Just another anecdote for you...

For work I used to interview a lot of families and get background information on them - like where they are from, where their family lives now, etc. While I didn't ever compile the data - there appeared to be a pretty significant trend that if someone was from out of state, they had family and siblings living in multiple states. But if they were from Utah, most of the time all of their family lived in Utah. With some rare exceptions in which a single sibling somehow escaped out of state.

I had multiple conversations with my wife regarding this during the time I was in that line of work.

If only I could have been a fly on the wall for those conversations. Super interesting topic.

              Admittedly, they were short conversations.

What I was attempting to note was that this is not something I'm just recognizing as a result of seeing the posts here. I recognized it long ago in the families I was meeting with - and it was obvious and stood out enough that I shared that observation with my wife on several occasions.

Right-- but you still have to get hired. With that Stanford degree, you have a lot more leeway with your GPA and class standing than you would coming out of BYU. I mean, BYU career services tries to focus on placement at big law outside of Utah and prides itself when we do land a nice clerkship or NYC/LA big law spot, but those are the top whatever % kids. You can work at the big SLC firms from BYU or Utah just like you can coming out of Harvard or Stanford, but your resume has to be on point.

My Dad's side of the family is like this - a large family and two of the kids "escaped" Utah. One married an Air Force officer and another had a career in research/academia. There were several times where my Dad tried to help his siblings with job opportunities when they were out of work but they would not consider leaving Utah. All the kids (my cousins) from the Utah families have stayed in Utah and are raising their kids there. With the other two families, half of them relocated to Utah when starting their careers/families and half are spread out around the country.

If you are below the top 20% at BYU Law, the CSO does nothing for you. You are on your own. Oh, they'll post open jobs but none of the firms they get to come on campus will look at anyone under the top 20%, looking on indeed is just as helpful.

they don't do anything if you're in the top 20%, either. or the top 10%. or the top 5%.

It's some kind of creepy the way uofutah puts these 18-year-olds in front of that picture and has them to do the double loser sign.

Not too many football players going on to Law school, not sure why we are talking about Stanford law vs BYU law in this thread.

With regards to Midwest comparisons, Midwest states paying higher wages than Utah is not necessarily a knock on Utah. More accurately, a reflection on the desirability of living in the midwest. My boss in St Louis constantly bemoaned the fact that he could hire people from either coast fairly easily but that none of them ever stayed. I was with him for 24 months before moving to Utah.
