DC: "Put four guys on him."
AC: "But that'll leave other receivers open!"

AC: "You're right, what was I thinking." Sends player out with the new plan

Wrubell: "Max drops back to pass, looking, looking... He has Collie on the sideline and... Pass incomplete, intended for Collie. That was a really hard catch to make with four guys around him."

I think you are understimating BYU's OL. Go back to 2006 and BYU's OL was very good. BYU lost a 3 year starter in the 2nd game and from that game forward BYU started 2 1st year starting sophs, one soph who started as a freshman, a four year starting senior and one junior who was a JC transfer.

3 of BYU's starters next year will have every bit as much experience as Bright, Feinga and Aulai from 2006. Reynolds is going to be very good next year as a sophmore and Willing is a solid journeyman OL who started in the dark years of Crowton as a freshman. From a talent perspective I am wary to believe that the new guys will be as talented as naturally talented as Bright and Feinga but I don't think the difference will be huge.

I think you will be surprised at how well they handle OU. OU will still win the game going away, but I will be surprised if the BYU OL is manhandled. Further, by the time BYU gets to MWC foes I think the OL will acquit itself very well and finish the year as one of the top two or three OLs in the conference. BYU's offense will do well this year. I also think the defense will be better as well. I don't expect it to be as good as 2006 or 2007, but I think we will all be pleasently surprised. A better defense will make the offense look better as it will get more chances to move the ball in more critical locations.

Actually this will be interesting to see. Someone found a stat that indicating total number of starts by an offensive line and victories. I forget what the number is but this past season Utah's O-Line had something like 120 combined starts and will have at least 90 this next year. BYU is returning something like 21 total starts, which doesn't point to the greatest of seasons.

There's a reason why those teams finished the season ranked 1st, 11th, and 24th in total defense, while the others ranged from 38 to 113 with an average of 80. We can only wonder how Max would have fared against the nation's #3 defense, Alabama. Maybe Oklahoma will be his coming out game.

Right, that is one of my original scenarios: those three teams were just that much better on defense than the rest of the bunch. Sizzle's answer is that those three teams merely figured out that Hall locked in on Collie, while I guess no one else had the brains to see that.

IMO, it was a combination of our porous defense putting added pressure on our offense and Hall trying to carry too much of that load and forcing stuff that wasn't there.
