I was surprised to read revenue from Utah ticket sales and donations exceeds Utah's TV revenue even though Utah is receiving its full share as a PAC12 member. I assumed with membership in the PAC12, the TV money would be the biggest source of Utah's revenues. Guess not.

According to the linked article, Utah doesn't receive a full share until the 2015 season.

Utah received $16M in distributions from the conference (compared to $21M for everyone else...Hmmm).

But let's just pretend that they did receive $21M, like everyone else. Add the $24.1M they received in donations and ticket sales, and they are still short more than $21M that they have to make up outside of conference distributions and ticket sales/donations. Where do you suppose that is coming from? Broadcast rights for KALL700?

To be fair - this article is more than a year old. It says that Utah received $10.2M in 2014 and would receive a full share in 2015. They aren't talking about the 2015 football season, their talking about the FY. So the question is, when does the FY end? The State of Utah's FY ends in June 30. When does the PAC 12's FY end? It isn't a stretch to say that the FY15 may have already ended, and they may have already received their distribution. According to my link above, they received $16M for FY14 (which is according to the conference tax filings.) If the FY ends mid-year, then the tax filings could include one-half year of partial share and one-half year of full share.

Eddie somewhat mentioned this already but there is a difference on when revenue is earned and when it is paid. The 2014 article I linked mentioned $10.2M paid in 2014, that would have been for the 2013 football season and a partial share. The $16M paid in 2015 would have been for the 2014 football season and would have been a full share. So Utah started earning full shares for PAC-12 revenue starting with the 2014 football season but would not have received payment until 2015.

I'm not sure what to make of Dr. Hill's statement of Utah receiving a full share last year (2014). Utah would have earned a full share in 2014 but would not have received payment until this year.

I could be wrong on this. My point of reference is with Nebraska and it's exit from the Big 12. The rumors of the Huskers exit came when universities were about to receive their TV payouts from the previous season. The Big 12 was threatening to withhold payments to Nebraska and Colorado even though those payments were for games that were played the previous season.

A calendar section in the most recent edition of Popular Mechanics magazine lists the Sept. 3 Michigan season opener with the note: "College football season gets underway tonight with the University of Michigan in a cupcake game against Utah."
