So with five power conferences, it seems like they'll have to eventually go to a 6 or 8 team playoff.

On the other hand, this year might have been an anomaly, where there were more than four legitimate teams that were either deserving of a shot (FSU) or serious contenders (the other three teams plus TCU and even Baylor). I don't love the idea of going to eight, because you're going to end up with a couple two loss teams most years. Six might be better with the top two teams getting byes.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

      Eight seems perfect to me.

The college football playoffs are awesome. It's too bad it took them sinking to get to this point but it's nice to have teams settle it all in the field.

GLENDALE, Arizona - Arizona head football coach Rich Rodriguez apologized for his negative comments about Boise State (leaked by an Arizona cheerleader who has since been dismissed from the cheer squad) after his team lost the Vizio Fiesta Bowl. Rodriguez said after the Fiesta Bowl teams were announ…

Rodriguez said after the Fiesta Bowl teams were announced that the Broncos would win zero games in the PAC-12 and that his team would rip the nuts off Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.
“It was just locker room talk, you know, that’s very different from how football players and coaches talk to the media,” Rodriguez said. “The cheerleader has been dismissed and we apologize she decided to take something I said in private and make it public. We lost this game tonight, but I don’t think they necessarily won it… [quarterback] played terribly and lost it for us.”
“They are a lot better than I thought,” Rodriguez said. “What they have done with all those one and two star recruits is pretty good. I think they might win a couple games in the PAC. But, you know, we just played poorly tonight. Broncos took advantage of an off-night.”
Class act by Rich Rob to dismiss the cheerleader and throw his QB under the bus.

That's probably how it will end up, but if you look at the the final rankings prior to the bowls in past seasons, then you'll see that in most years the 7th and 8th teams are usually quite similar to what Miss. State and Michigan State were this year. They either couldn't beat the elite teams on their schedule in two tries (Michigan State) and/or they were failing by the end of the season (Miss. State).

I agree. I don't know how i feel about the committee. Obviously they seek to protect the interests of the P5. If they go to 8 i would like a little better representation for non P5 schools on the committee.

I think 4 teams is just right. Most years there will be two/three really good teams, and a also ran. Let them duke it out. From a business perspective it's always better to have someone banging on the door to get into the party, rather than letting in the also-rans who would dilute the playoff product. If it's got to be 4 or 8 teams, 4 will always be a better choice.

Eight or sixteen make sense to allow for upstarts outside of the traditional power programs. Four is enough to exclude participation by anybody else.

Well, I think the playoff is vindicated. Under the previous system, Bama would have been playing FSU for the National Championship and there is a good chance Alabama would have won the championship again.

I still think an 8 team playoff is ideal. Like I mentioned before I think the best setup would be the 5 conference champions, the top non-P5 team (adds a Cinderella aspect), and 2 at large.

This year it wouldn't be as clear cut as most years with Michigan St. and Miss. St, but at their position it is hard to argue that they are the best teams in the country. I don't know of any years where a P5 one loss team is excluded.

This year, it would have looked liked this:

                        ACC: FSU
                        B1G: Ohio St.
                        Big 12: Baylor
                        Pac 12: Oregon
                        SEC: Alabama

                        non-P5: BSU

                        At Large: TCU, Miss St.

I enjoy the playoffs, but it really did crush the rest of the bowls. I don't give a crap about any of the non-playoff bowls now. I didn't expect that.

The other bowls have been crap for years. The playoff certainly didn't do that for me.

Why did you care about any of the non NCS bowls for the last 11 years (other than the one your team was playing in)? The playoff hasn't truly impacted the importance of any of those bowls. Why did people think those bowls meant something before?

That said, I agree that this is now the perception. There were lots of empty seats at the Fiesta, Orange, Peach, and Cotton Bowls. I'm guessing those bowls were close to selling out in previous years.

Yep. Some of us are ahead of the curve. I can still enjoy a meaningless bowl game if it's a good game (MSU-Baylor 2015; Oklahoma-Boise State 2007 etc.), but most bowls are boring and nigh unwatchable.
