I think this is right. If Miss. St., Notre Dame, FSU and TCU or KSU all win out, for example, then I'm not sure Utah passes any of them in the standings, even though Utah would have an impressive resume at that point. Even Auburn could win out and have just the one loss to Miss. St. and be a strong playoff candidate.Originally posted by falafel View PostIts a little bit of both. Utah won't win out, but even if they did, they would still need some help. There are about 15 one-loss teams that could all win out and be ranked above Utah.
Of course, many of the teams above Utah right now will play each other, so it isn't as crowded as it might initially seem. There will be some built-in thinning of the ranks. Also, it's challenging for any of these teams to win out, so I think that weighs somewhat against the field just like it does against Utah. FSU probably has the easiest remaining path of the current top-20 teams."What are you prepared to do?" - Jimmy Malone

I don't understand the weird chicken little talk nor the clamor over coaches like this. Remember when we just had to keep Doman on staff?"I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

A product of the BYU hype machine (BYU coaches, BYU media, local and national media, etc) and not getting anywhere close to the expectations set. Maybe next season expectations will be more tempered. But based on history, they won't be.Originally posted by Commando View PostI don't understand the weird chicken little talk nor the clamor over coaches like this. If I were online when this was posted I would have locked this shit after this post. This is all that needed to be said but I'll chip in my $0.02.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostCan someone please expound on this "losing the in-state recruiting battle" thing i keep reading the past few days? people need to get a grip. After 4 games BYU was undefeated, nationally ranked, and in the heisman conversation...all with the same head coach, recruits, lack of conference affiliation, and other baggage that we have now. After a slew of injuries hit us, we lost 4 games in a row. Turns out BYU will probably finish the season 6-6 or maybe 7-5. Big deal. All this talk of apocalyptic change is really stupid.
Taysom Hill is one of the top 10 college football players in America. And he plays the most important position on the field. That was a catastrophic loss. It can't be understated and the fact that everyone just seems to be forgetting that boggles my mind. I keep hearing arguments "well Taysom didn't play defense" or "the offense is still putting up points". But that's nonsense. Taysom meant more to this team than any single player. Hell, more than any coach. He gave the team its swagger and confidence. He was the playmaker that elevated the play of everyone else on both sides of the ball. He was the undisputed leader on this team. The one guy with credibility to get in the face of another player. BYU just didn't lose a Heisman candidate. It lost its heart. It lost its identity. Taysom going down was soul crushing.
Then you compound the loss of Taysom with all of the other injuries. Algie, Hine, Jamaal, Kurtz, Blackmon, Kearsley, Mathews, Strigham, Wesley. That's just offense. Leavitt, Bills, JJ, Fua, Alisa, Bronson, Marques, Langi. All guys who have missed games due to injury. Our two best pass rushers have played what, 2 games together? Our secondary is depleted and now young guys are forced into playing with limited reps. Jamaal is our 2nd best player on offense and he's played just 4 games. Even your stacked P5 powerhouses would struggle mightily to overcome these kinds of losses.
Everyone just needs to calm the fuck down. Fire Bronco? LOL. GTFO. And replace him with who? Bronco isn't without his warts, but he's pretty damn good. Give him legit talent, unlimited resources and no limiting honor code and the guy would put together a defense that wouldn't be scored upon. And as DDD said, nobody was spewing any of this shit when we were 4-0, ranked #18, everyone was discussing BYU and the playoff, and Taysom and Bronco were giving interviews daily on all the nationally syndicated radio shows.
BYU gets crippled by injuries and Utah barely beats the most overrated team in the country in UCLA, barely beat a sorry ass Oregon State team in 2OT and barely beat a USC team with a ton of injuries, just 48 scholarship players with 22 walk ons at home and everyone in Utah fucking loses their minds. I would like to add that people not giving Bronco credit for winning w a QB he didn't recruit? LOL. We got the top HS QB in the country and that got us nowhere, and that wasn't due to a recruiting lapse- just a player that didn't develop. Bronco wins a lot of games with a good QB behind center; that's the bottom line. And we got some good ones coming."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"
