As another former childhood paper reader (though not a nerdy delivery boy). I think the 25 came about when USA Today started ranking teams. iirc the AP was top 20 and UST was a top 25. Or I could be getting senile, and none of this is true

I delivered the papers on a sweet diamond back bmx bike and then a redline after the DB was stolen. Both paid for by my paper route. Wasn't a nerd.

How can you be so sure? They may have been talking about the arm strength shown on throws of three yards or less, and they may have considered purely strength not accuracy or touch, and they may have subscribed to a post-modern view of what constitutes "strength." Given all those considerations, they may have been referring to Conner Manning.

To be honest, I was basing my assumption less on the bolded particulars of the account and more on the fact that they would be talking about Utah at all.

Well, there sure as hell are not 25 teams with better wins than we have. I'm not sure Nebraska is going to be real good, but Boise should run roughshod on the Mountain West and again.

Nebraska should be a bowl team this year and the Big Ten West is not all that intimidating. I think it very likely that Nebraska ends the season ranked; may depend on their bowl match-up. Will know better this week with Nebraska@Miami. Agree that BYU deserves to be ranked.

It was around 1990, I remember it happening when Ty was at BYU.

Correct. It used to be Top 20 in both polls. I also delivered papers as a kid and in the Sunday sports section on page 2 of the local paper there was a box listing the AP Top 20 and how they fared the previous day. It was fun speculating how the AP poll would change before the voting results were printed the following day. That was back when the team I follow was on a streak of consecutive weeks in the Top 20 that went on for about a decade. During that time, it was also fun to see BYU get ranked and get the recognition the Cougars deserved.

Random, somewhat related question: Am I remembering incorrectly, or did the AP poll only used to be a top 20? I had a paper route as a kid, and I usually devoured the sports section before heading out to deliver. Anyway, I have this distinct memory of BYU hovering around the top 20 and bouncing into and out of the rankings/others receiving votes.

Yes. I know in the 80s it was top 20, but I don't remember when it expanded to 25.

Edit: I'll put in one small caveat. Back in the day, the coaches' poll was UPI. I know the UPI poll then was top 20. I am pretty sure, but not 100%, that AP was the same.
