While the SEC has been the best BCS conference for the past few years, I think it's important to point out that often the top SEC schools don't schedule each other. I first became aware of this during the late 1970s and early 1980s when first Alabama was playing for national championships and then Georgia. The two schools didn't play each other while in other top conferences, namely the Big 8 and Big 10, Nebraska-Oklahoma and Ohio St.-Michigan were knocking each other out of the NC picture. Why didn't the top teams in the SEC at that time (Alabama and Georgia) play?Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostThen the NFL still has that perception because the SEC is still putting more players in the NFL than any other conference. Especially 1st and 2nd rounders.
I am not sure bowl games are true indicators that the rest of college football has caught up to the SEC. When teams have 30 days to prepare and nothing is on the line, that isn't a true indication of the best team. Where would Oklahoma, Nebraska and even Florida St. be right now had they played the conference schedule that the SEC has to play? Nobody really knows.
While Alabama does play Tennessee every year, the Crimson Tide have scheduled Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina (usually the top teams in the SEC East) four times each over the past 12 years. And 2103 was no different for Alabama: they didn't play Georgia, South Carolina, Missouri (or Florida). Meanwhile Oklahoma plays every team in the Big 12 and played each team in the other division 6 times over a 12 year period when there were two divisions.
With Alabama not having several ranked SEC teams on their 2013 schedule (Missouri, SC, Georgia), I see little difference between Alabama's SEC schedule and Oklahoma's Big 12 schedule. Both teams played 5 bowl teams on their conference schedule:
Alabama: Texas A&M (9-4), Ole Miss (8-5), LSU (10-3), Miss St. (7-6), Auburn (12-1)
Oklahoma: Texas (8-5), Texas Tech (8-5), Kansas St. (8-5), OK St. (10-3), Baylor (11-2)“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

This is the elephant in the room that no one talks about nationally. The SEC is a great conference but they only play 8 conference games in a 14 team conference. And the "top-to-bottom" argument is crap. The bottom 4 or 5 teams in the SEC aren't any more of a threat than the bottom 4 of the Big 12 or Pac.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostWhile the SEC has been the best BCS conference for the past few years, I think it's important to point out that often the top SEC schools don't schedule each other. LOL. Is that a reference to Texas hiring Charlie Strong from Louisville as their new head coach?Originally posted by BigPiney View Post
Will be interesting to see who Strong brings over to Austin from his staff in Louisville. His OC, Shawn Watson, was the former OC at Nebraska under Bo Pelini. Always thought it was a mistake for Nebraska to boot Watson.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”
