First time in 15 years that I didn't finish watching a BYU football game. I am so tired of the obvious efforts by Doman and Bronco to protect Riley from being benched. They defend their decisions and egos at the expense of the program. I'm sick of it. Maybe I'll watch games next year.

that's about what it was for me too, kind of depressing, isn't it?

This season has definitely been more than "kind of" depressing. I can't say the coaches don't deserve what they got, but it sucks to watch as a fan.

It is about more than Riley and the bad offense. After the loss to Utah there was nothing to play for. Independence is awful, I have basically lost all interest in BYU football. I'd much rather be watching them play CSU, Wyoming, AFA, SDSU with games that might still mean winning a conference.

Don't get me wrong, Riley is awful and the offense is boring and painful, but the lack of interest runs a lot deeper than that. I watched every minute of 0-3 against Utah in 2003, that offense was every bit as unproductive as this year.

I really think what we are seeing are symptoms of a systemic problem. That unfortunately probably has its root well over TH's head.

I still firmly believe it began when it was decided BYU football and maybe athletics was getting to much of the spotlight or carried to much weight. When they let Tuckett go and put in the head of I think the PE department to be the AD, that signaled things were going to be run from levels above the AD. The Fehlberg hiring and what followed subsequently only enhanced my feeling.

On 60 minutes they talked about college football and focused on Michigan and Alabama. The MIchigan AD is a former CEO and he said it is important a "business" model is followed. He said that 70% of donations to the University, non athletic, come during the FB season. Schools believe the FB program is key to national exposure for the school.

Of course BYU has a different model and I criticize those in charge with hesitancy. I am first a BYU supporter because of athletics. I know it is the churches school and is a great school, but my kids didn't go there and in a way it seems like a place that doesn't really represent the average member of the church. Without athletics, BYU is basically BYU-Idaho to me.

I understand my view would fall on deaf ears at the BOT, they have bigger things to think about.

I guess my wish would be they would be willing to take more risks and not worry so much about the image. I can imagine though with the number of faithful members who don't care about BYU football, including ALUF's, were they to do that there would be even a larger number of complainers.

I think BYU has all the ingredients to have a nationally recognized program, just not the desire to do what it would take.

This is where I sit. I am just losing the interest neccesary to put in the investment to go down to the games. If I lived along the WF it might be different but I am losing the belief it is worth it. The program is waning the intensity and excitement it brought out of and to me. I think it is due to many reasons, a mixture of self-inflicted wounds and challenges outside of BYU's control.

I usually think PK and DJ have their heads up their clavens, but this morning PK said something that rang true with me. If Bronco has a flaw, it is arrogance.

He came into the program with demands above what other coaches get. Well, that is OK if you are that good. He proved to be very good as a DC. What he did as a HC the first few years was also A+, but I think the accolades may have gone a bit to his head. Why else would someone call out your customers.

Arrogance leads to subborness and I think Bronco has a bit of a I will "show you" I am right that can be to his detriment.

You give him enough talent and I believe the guy can flat out coach. I just don't think he believes he needs talent, because he can out execute and organize everyone.

I think the attitude eventually turned me off more than the wins and losses. Remember how long I stuck with Crowton?

I've swung completely over to your view. You now have a disciple. The admin has created an environment that will make it tough for BYU to be competitive in a major conference. Holmoe and Bronco are gritting their teeth and doing their best but as of now the situation is untenable. For a variety of factors BYU now does not have a big enough talent pool to pull quality athletes.

I think it's been a terrible decision. Keep BSU and SDSU in the MWC and get rid of the Mtn seems like a good plan to me but it may be to late to go that route.

Maybe we have all swung to each others side. I don't comment on technical aspects of the game much, because I have found on here you and some others are far more competent.

Napper finally got it into my head that much of my problem had to do with expectations.

By the way, did I ever get your golf shoes back to you?

BYU Football has now been put in a position that makes succeeding as a quality football program extremely difficult. Lack of a quality conference, poor late season schedule, increased academic standards for athletes, the honor code, and the rise of quality alternative programs (i.e. U of U and USU) for LDS athletes are hamstringing the program in a way that will make it difficult to recruit the number of high-caliber athletes that BYU needs.

Consider that many players from BYU's glory days would not even qualify academically under current BYU standards. Nor were many of them raise the bar type of guys in high school to the degree that BYU now wants.

Detmer comes to mind. I doubt he would have even gotten here. If he had he was a bad practice player and had a local RM ahead of him. I doubt he would have seen the field his Sophomore year. Of course McMahon would have never made it and would the current staff have recognized Young's talent. Even Scovill didn't, but Tolner did.

Lunch sounds good. I will be gone all next week, but anytime after that.
