I feel like Riley's been forced on Doman by Bronco.

I don't know how you can fire him under those circumstances.

If anyone deserves blame for some of these losses, it's Bronco. Him and doman can't seem to come to an accord on whether Riley should be pulled if he's hurt.

That's the kicker for me - I'm not sure who is at fault here.

In many ways I've lost faith in Doman and I'm losing faith in Bronco. All I can think of is that Riley has naked photos of one or both of them...heck, maybe together. It makes NO sense to keep him in the game when he is so injured he looks like he can barely stand once he gets to the sideline. There is no way he has the speed or agility to run, and he can't have the same velocity or accuracy on his throws if he can't twist. So he really can't do either well (if he ever could...) Honestly - would they keep ANY other player in the game if they were this hurt?

The rest of the QB's have got to be wondering why they even dress for the game. Unless Riley loses a limb or BYU is up by 50 (which won't happen if Riley his hurt) there is no way they are getting to play. So what's the point? I suppose you got a free trip to San Jose out of the deal.

Back to the original topic - I can see giving Doman one more year. I don't know why, I suppose I'm just a patient man. And I'm not sure how much is Doman and how much is Bronco when it comes to Riley. In all honesty - whoever it is needs to be done. They didn't learn a damn thing from the BSU game. On top of that they are potentially risking the long-term health of a player - chronic back issues are horrible.

But I'll give Doman one more year. And if there isn't some improvement in the offense, it's over. And the one year will likely have a short leash - understanding that BYU will have some stiff competition, this isn't exclusively about wins and losses. It is about seeing some identity in the offense, seeing a QB who can actually progress through receivers, and seeing and offense that isn't a QB run every other play.

Somebody looks to be in over their head. And if it is Doman, he needs to go. And if it is Bronco micromanaging Doman because Doman is so new that he doesn't necessarily trust his decision making, then I suppose Doman still needs to go - so that Bronco can get an offensive coordinator that he'll trust to do the job and not screw it up himself.

There has to be some serious changes that take place on the offensive side of the ball. The Offensive stats do not lie. I love BYU but when it comes to lettings someone go, BYU has a hard time doing it and usually screws it up. Any other program would not lose an ounce of sleep of getting rid of Doman and Weber. I am thinking the only Offensive coach worth keeping is Cahoon.

No way Bronco deserves the blame for keeping Riley in the game. That rests with Doman. If it doesn't than what the F is Doman doing anyways? I still think his play call getting Hill hurt warrants his firing along with his terrible explanation throwing Hill under the bus in the process.

If nothing happens, than the program will take a major hit which could take years to recover. Because as much as Bronco hates the fans that complain and criticize, he has to understand that this is not New Mexico and results matter. Once he loses the fanbase with this kind of bull shit you can stick a fork in him.

I would like to talk to Holmoe on an off the record, I won't tell anyone basis.

I just would like to know how he feels about conference realignment, the FB program and if how much say he has in anything.

I haven't, nor would I, ever send a "as a CC member" e-mail to him, but I will bet he has gotten some. I wonder what serious donors have been saying?

I hate to say it, but I think Doman has to go. I could murder kick his Stake President but that's a whole new discussion. The problem with waiting a year is that the first year of a new OC is going to be ugly. Next year is going to be ugly anyway. Throw away next year, but don't throw away two years. That's not fair to Hill.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I am just not sure we get an upgrade. Has Bronco or BYU hired a proven, high profile coach in the past?

BYU is right up there with Harvard when it comes to Yield percentages (percentage accepted who actually enroll). Perhaps many athletes are looking elsewhere for other reasons since I think BYU could do a much better job of recruiting these players.

BYU hasn't seemed to do very well with elite recruits. I get that they have a high yield percentage, and lots of kids come that could have had a nice education elsewhere.

I'd definitely agree that kids from Utah seem to have a harder choice of whether to come to BYU or Utah, lots of the time.
Don't think it is the mission thing...

I think it has more to do with how BYU (doesn't) recruit.

A reader's letter to Cougar Sportsline mentioned the 1975 season that I remember very well. Coming off of their first bowl appearance ever, but with the graduation of Gary Sheide, the Cougars struggled early on, losing their first three games. The coaching stuff was smart enough not to stick with the same losing formula and line-up, however, and benched Mark Giles in favor of Jeff Duva, still with no improvement. They then went to a basketball player, Gifford Nielson, with substantially better results (great comeback win against New Mexico!).

The current coaching staff seems more inclined to do the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. Would that Riley Nelson (bless his intensity, grit, moxie, etc.) had gone the way of Mark Giles.

But there may have been a Ryan Hancock. Unfortunately, we will never know. We've learned through sad experience, what BYU doesn't have, but will always be left to speculate, what they might have had.

Probably not, but nobody knew how good Giff was until he actually got in and played a few series. And while we may not have a Giff or any of his successors (Wilson, McMahon, Young, Bosco...what a run, I weep at the memory), I know the bench has a few options not named Riley Nelson.

do we know that? I mean I know Lark has had garbage minutes against garbage teams, but I don't think we really know what he could have done in a real game situation. I don't think Doman or Bronco really know either.

I certainly wish we knew for sure.

I'd love to rewatch the Utah, Boise, OSU, Notre Dame, and SJSU games with Lark playing.
