I should revise my statement. I see many of the local high school kids come through at work, and I chat with them about what school they like, why tehy made that choice, etc. Obviously it's anecdotal and a small sample, but I see high school kids throughout the year.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostDefine "good".
They're a lot more enthusiastic about the U of U due to the PAC12, recent BCS success, lots of guys in the NFL and that type of stuff. Kids are really excited to play USC, UCLA, Oregon, etc. They think BYU has some good teams as well, but it's not guaranteed, they say BYU can't get the good teams to come here, etc.
By "good" I mean the dominant portion of the 80s. As of now, they've watched both teams since they were kids, since they were 9 or 10, and it's been pretty clear over the last 8 years or so that BYU has been above average, but Utah has had the types of seasons that you dream about and the types of seasons that reel in bigger portions of the athletic spectrum.
There's kids going to Utah now that would have never chosen them 20 years ago. Chase Hansen, Star, the Krugers are likely at BYU in the early 90s.
Enough stuff has happened that has changed the recruiting dynamic. BYU still gets it's fair share, but Utah is taking many more than they used to.Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I don't know. Maybe they don't want to serve missions. Maybe they feel they can reach their athletic goals in better fashion elsewhere.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostBYU still has tremendous drawing power to out-of-state LDS student athletes. I think many of the best give BYU more consideraton then probably the Cougars merit right now. I've known of top students who forgo attending elite or Ivy league colleges to attend BYU. BYU is right up there with Harvard when it comes to Yield percentages (percentage accepted who actually enroll). Perhaps many athletes are looking elsewhere for other reasons since I think BYU could do a much better job of recruiting these players.
BYU hasn't seemed to do very well with elite recruits. I get that they have a high yield percentage, and lots of kids come that could have had a nice education elsewhere.
I'd definitely agree that kids from Utah seem to have a harder choice of whether to come to BYU or Utah, lots of the time. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

Not really anything like it at all.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostKind of like the U. and basketball. I feel your pain.
BYU football might be down, but Utah basketball is out.
Utah basketball has been churning for more than a decade at Gary Crowton and BELOW levels.
The ONLY thing that is similar is that kids today have no recollection of the "good old days" for either Utah basketball or BYU football.
Maybe that's what you meant and I'm just being obtuse. If so, I beg your pardon.
The topic of Utah basketball just makes me very cranky.

I imagine Holmoe being human gets tired of hearing displeasure over the PR screw ups his head coach throws out on occasion.
Think of the poor VP of sales who has 30% of the customers who love his saleperson in a certain region. 40% don't really care either way and 30% who want the salesman to stop trying to convert them and just sale the product or have decided to start buying less of the product.
OF course if the CEO loves the product and the way the salesman delivers it, well the VP better also be careful with his PR stuff.

I know you guys are talking about football and basketball, but from my personal experience, I turned down a half tuition scholarship to Columbia and a full tuition to Grinnell for no scholarship at BYU. I don't know the definition of elite athlete, but I was top 25 in the country and I chose BYU. I wanted to go to BYU because it was BYU. I think there are many lds athletes that feel the same. This is why our Olympic sports do so well.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostBYU still has tremendous drawing power to out-of-state LDS student athletes. I wondered if it was a way for Holmoe to force a decision at an institution not known for making such decisions.Originally posted by creekster View PostI agree. I can only assume that Holmoe is so tired of being kicked that he could no longer fight the urge to find a dog that he could kick.

I don't have enough information to take a stand on Doman. However, IF, he doesn't have the ability to deveop a decent QB, then the excuse he doesn't have a decent QB to work with will always be there.Originally posted by jay santos View PostNo possible way. They won't dump Doman that fast. I'm not going judge him too harshly, anyway, until he is working with a decent QB.

Agree. The no decent QB excuse is going to wear out pretty quickly.Originally posted by byu71 View PostI don't have enough information to take a stand on Doman.
