I think that is part of mpfunks point. A 25 year in his 4th year of coaching shouldn't be in his position. And those factors shouldn't be used as excuses. Personally I think that was a poor hire as well. Whittingham is a good coach but this could really prove to be a chink in his armor. It seems like he really liked bj partly because he knew he could control him.

Utah's struggled with offensive continuity since Ludwig left (and I'm sure many would argue it began after Urban left). Might as well bring in a guy who will be here a few years and has familiarity with the personnel.

Plus, the combination of Whit's insularity, Utah's lack of sexiness, and budget minimized our options. Funk's statement is reactionary and premature at best.

Good lands, that one still gets me boiled. Crowton went down in a wild burst of flames. I agree with earlier posters, Whit would have had a harder time at BYU doing what Broncos doing.

Why was Jaime Hill not brought up too, long long long before Doman.

How many games has Doman quit coaching in?

You could have an automated play calling system calling in Anae's old gameplans and it'd be light years better than Doman's "thing" he runs.

I can't imagine Doman trying to call a game when Lark is the starter.

I thought he called a very good game. He was creative and put his players in the best position to win. He is not in the same terrible ballpark as Doman. Doman runs 6 plays total and can't even coach his position.

I am bullish on Johnson. As I watched the game Thursday, I could see the wheels turning. Give him three years and a qb that can a) stay greatly and b) have legit D-1, and most of the haters will go away.

There are some significant growing pains ahead, but given the loss of Wynn and the injuries to an already thin oline, he will have an accelerated lesson in how to salvage something out of nothing. That is where brilliance is forged.

What to do with Doman? I'm conflicted. He clearly shouldn't be OC next year, but can we simply fire him? I don't think so. Notwithstanding his performance as OC, I don't think we can simply cast off a guy who has been connected to BYU for the better part of 20 years (if you include time at summer camps).

He's in a tough spot. Hes a great recruiter, but hes in over his head, wants to be great, but hes squandering talent. He loves BYU. Solution? You make him assistant AD under the guise of training Holmoe's replacement. He stays connected to BYU, its as close to a lateral move as we can afford, and most importantly, we replace him with a guy who can run an offense.

that assumes Bronco will do something.

In the real world of football Bronco is a great DC and good HC. Doman is probably a good QB coach and an average OC.

In the BYU world both of men of great character. BYU doesn't hire proven people to take jobs. They hire potential and hope and pray. I am not sure there is a provern OC out there that BYU can hire. WE have to hope Doman grows into the job.

I'll make a brazen and bold prediction. Neither Bronco or Doman are going anywhere.
