  • I took my 5 and 3 year old to the game with my wife as well. We had a really nice time. We took them to the bookstore and got them some new gear. I bought a dry fit shirt and a T shirt.

If I was the coach, my game plan for a QB that hasn't seen much gametime this year would not have been to drop 8 in to coverage. BYU doesn't recruit elite talent in the secondary. We have a good secondary this year, but against a team like these guys the real way to get to them and beat them was to pressure the QB. Their QB had all day to throw. We didn't lay a hand on him most plays.

Riley ran the ball too much. Some of it was good, some of it was just that he didn't know what to do. The line sucks, but a better QB would get rid of the ball. Riley had a nice first half. He played Riley Hero Ball in the second half and it wasn't enough. I'm pretty convinced Riley can't win us a big game at this point.

I liked what I saw out of Williams. He missed some holes at time, but he's the best RB we have, and I like his explosiveness.

WTF, Friel. Help out your QB.

We were outcoached. They did a great job of getting the matchups they wanted. Need an easy completion? Isolate someone on Ogletree, who's a dumpster fire on passing downs. Johnson got eaten alive today. How about some help over the top for that kid, coach?

The 2 pass interferences that led to a TD with about 5 minutes left were horrible. Shame on you, refs.

I thought Doman called a better game than he has previously. I feel like our offense is so limited due to the QB and the line, that he's really limited in what he can do from an OC standpoint. Those are the 2 most important pieces of the offense. I'm not a Doman apologist, but I liked the shovel pass play. I wish we would go long more often.

Ross Apo sucks. I can't believe he had an offer from Texas. He gets no separation. No wonder they never throw it to him.

Oregon State is just a better team. We schemed poorly for what they wanted to do, but those guys are for real. They probably won't win the P12, but that's a really solid team. I thought their offensive line was excellent, but they also only had ot block three guys the whole time on pass plays. They did a great job on their outside runs seal blocking.

Bronco is Steve Cleveland. This is it, folks. This is who we are under him. We are unlikely to do better than this. We can beat up on some bad and slightly above average teams, but if we see teams with equal or slightly better talent than us, we'll lose. Boise, Utah, and Oregon State are the proof this year on that. I think Notre Dame is going to boat race us. BYU fans were pissed that Jay Drew predicted a 7-5 year, but it's not looking like he was real far off.

    • I wasn't upset by either PI calls. Both seemed legit to me. If you don't make an attempt to play the ball or turn around in any way, you are going to get a flag.

One other play that came to my mind.....wtf was Tree doing in coverage on the one big play? I didn't see who happened and looked over just in time to see the tackle.

      • I thought the second one was one of the worst I've seen in a while.

The first one I didn't have that big of a problem with, except for them doing the same thing to Hoff in the end zone in the first half. Those two looked pretty similar to me.

Only babies blame the refs, we didn't lose because of that. We lost because we couldn't stop them in the 2nd half, and our offense stagnated in the fourth quarter.

As far as Tree, he's just a real liability in coverage. He can't even stay with the slowest tight ends. They just toss it over him, he never is looking back. I would try to isolate on him all game if I was an opposing coach. It's free yards every time.

        • You know its bad when Detmer is criticizing Riley on national(regional?) TV.

Max Hall or John Beck with an Anae led offense and we win this game easy just like the bowl game in 2009.
Before the offense saw the field, osu had driven the length of the field and scored a touchdown. Byu's offense then answered with a score - shortly thereafter, osu's offense put up another seven.

Hsaru, Riley is not good, but stop making excuses for the defense. They were embarrassing at home, on national tv last night - Riley or no Riley.

We won the game easily LAST YEAR...with Riley as QB, Doman led offense, and a defense nowhere near as good as this years version. We were also at their house.

              • Well the jerseys were rad. I wouldn't mind those as an alternate to be used maybe one game a year or so. I really liked the look of them.

That game hurt. It hurt because we knew that Riley sucks. We knew our OL couldn't block. And we knew that our offense was going to give up at least one touchdown. Those things were expected. But what wasn't expected was the defense to let us down like they did.

When you're dropping 8 and the defense still can't prevent huge passing plays, it is time to change up your scheme Bronco. Jordan Johnson was getting used and abused all day. This is the second game he's been picked on and been absolutely torched. He can't cover a baby with a blanket. Likewise, Tree is one of the more overrated players on the team. He is brutal in pass protection. If I am scheming an offense to play BYU I get Tree one on one with a RB out of the backfield or my TE. Then I take shots at JJ all day. Kind of like Yaz did.

Nick Howell hasn't been impressive with the secondary or special teams.

Weber still needs to go. Couldn't run block. Couldn't pass block. Riley doesn't help holding onto the ball and running around for an eternity.

Doman called a better game. I liked the shovel pass. Williams got big yards each time we did that. But quarterbacks probably shouldn't throw 50x a game. Least of all Riley. Good hell he throws an ugly ball. It was awesome to watch Yaz. He was impressive and reminded me of how quarterbacks used to play at LES.

I concur with those who say we got outcoached. Great playcalling by Mike Riley. Kept the defense off balance all game. They'd take shots and spread us out and then bust us up the middle with a delay or draw. The defense was quick and defended the edge well.

We're going to get killed next week. Can't wait for basketball.

I said this earlier in the game, but it really sucked watching the freaking backup at Oregon State throw a 10x better ball than the starter at QBU. They pull a kid off the bench that hasn't played in two years and he's making throws our starter could never dream of making. Ugh.

On Friday I had lunch with a kid that plays receiver at UW right now. We started talking about the Cougs and he asked me how in the world a kid who throws the ball like Riley managed to become the starting QB at BYU. I told him "grit, determination, leadership." He started laughing. I didn't think it was funny.

Maybe I should have reminded him that Riley actually beat them!
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

                  • I happily gave my tickets to a neighbor and we spent the weekend in Deer Valley. We watched most of the BYU game and a quarter of the Utes game and didn't give it another thought until just now. The state of football in this state is too embarrassing to even worry about. Time to turn the focus to a program that can actually progress. Go Dave Rose!

I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

I don't remember the exact words, but I think it was along the lines of being able to throw the ball down the field.

Last year I had this thought of who Riley reminded me of: Bob Jensen. He was a good runner with an unimpressive arm, too. He didn't last the season, if I remember correctly. Who replaced him? Was it Sean Covey? And then Detmer superseded him.

Reverse the first two, I think. Jensen replaced Lindsley.

I checked byucougars.com Lindsley played through 86, Jensen through 87, so you must be right. Those were some forgettable years.

It was our first experiment with the "LDS RM QB" concept. We moved away from it when Detmer replaced Covey. I don't think we came back to it until I guess there were some bad experiences with Walsh and Feterik being the faces of BYU football. At least that is what I seem to recall.
