It's really a shame. This was BYU's chance for a special win this year. It is now clear that we won't get it, resulting in three unmemorable years.
I'm not in the "Riley was good enough" camp. He did better than expected, sure, but you can't miss so many short passes, make as many boneheaded throws, and throw three picks and expect to win games. And no, I don't give him a pass for the pick-6. A better throw, and Ross probably catches it.
The defense gets their fair share of the blame, though. We got torched in the secondary.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

I've heard "luck" bantered about a few times. Here's what "luck" looks like: a short throw to a wide receiver was well behind him. That receiver had two hands on the ball, and bumped it up. A cornerback was in position, right where he was supposed to be, when the ball popped up and hit him in stride. A bad throw, and a bad catch, and good coverage adds up to "good luck." Another way to get to good luck is a big, strong tight end in good position, using good technique to block out other defenders vying for the tipped ball, while none of the three defenders surrounding him think to try to bring him to the ground or to hold back his arms, as would have been legal after the tip.
Luck has an amazing tendency to find the person who is where they are supposed to be and doing what they are supposed to be doing, especially when the other team is not.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

I miss our little factory of QBs. . .you remember? The QBs who could scramble and throw. Who destroyed our factory and can it be rebuilt?

It can be rebuilt. It is even possible that it can even be rebuilt by Doman, but he'll have to improve.Originally posted by Soccermom View PostI agree with you. I give no pass to r I ley.

Is Doman or Riley the cancer?Originally posted by fusnik View PostThere have been rumors Doman and Riley don't like each other thought it was amusing that Doman grabbed his arm on the sideline.
I'm shocked at the how many designed runs they had with Riley considering 3 weeks ago he couldn't go without heavy medication.
The more I think of it Domans the cancer that needs to be cut out. Get your ass in the booth and let position coaches coach during the game like a majority of programs. Get your emotional ass away from players, stop arguing with officials, celebrating with players and focus on the adjustments that need to be made.

I've never seen so many people vehemently defending a 99.8 passer rating with a 2.2 ypc on 13 carries on the ground as "good enough".
All against the #112th ranked out of 124 d1 teams passing defense.
Baffling how low of a bar Riley needs to meet.

I think that when people say "good enough" they are comparing him against himself in prior losses, in which he repeatedly made awful decisions and turned the ball over as a result, basically singlehandedly losing the game.
Do you think Riley singlehandedly lost the game today? The defense was porous. When we went nickel, we were destroyed on the ground. We were beat deep. We gave up too many big plays.
Riley played a decent first half. Not amazing and he did throw an awful INT, but that first drive was great and he threw several good balls that were inexcusably dropped. Give credit where credit is due. He was almost entirely ineffective in the second half, but no matter how you slice it, the defense didn't show up today. Riley was a big part of this loss, but this loss isn't "on" him necessarily.
You are correct that in the grand scheme of things, the bar for Riley is very low. On a day when he throws 3 INTs, many are giving him lots of credit. But that is Riley. At this stage, If the coaches play him, blame the coaches.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

You underestimate what a good offense can do for your team. I am not insinuating that any of those QBs would have produced that, but a good QB and offensive system makes your defense and offensive line look much much better.Originally posted by USU Coug View PostI don't think the outcome of this game would have been any different if Hill, Lark, or Heaps would have played in it.The defense had no answer. I'll be rooting for the Beavs in their games from here on out.
Max Hall or John Beck with an Anae led offense and we win this game easy just like the bowl game in 2009.
