We dropped 7 or 8 a lot of the time to cover 3 and still got burned much of the time.

And completely agreed on Ogletree. I can't believe there's not someone better we can put in on passing downs. He is a complete liability out there against pretty much anyone.
I caught a few minutes of Jan on the radio this afternoon and he essentially said the same thing. OSU used max protection - decided that their WR's were more athletic than BYU's DB's and that their pass protection in max protect was good enough to give them time for a WR to get open and for the QB to hit them. And they were right. Repeatedly.

He also primarily blamed the safeties for BYU getting beat over the top and really didn't have anything bad to say about the corners. I thought that was interesting...

No man knows my spreadsheet history.

Actually, I don't use spreadsheets and one of my biggest cougarguard/CUF disappointments was finding out the Lebowski embraces their use.

        • Jordan Johnson got killed out there.

Hadley has been as solid of a CB as we've had at BYU.

I thought the safeties did a poor job as well.

I wouldn't have had that game plan though. My game plan would have been to pressure the QB, hit him hard, and hit him often.

I'd have a different philosophy if I was a coach at BYU, though. I'd build my team around the premise of the front seven pressuring and covering up for the deficiencies in the secondary. You can hide a lot of average players in the secondary if you pressure the QB well and stop the run. Bronco's philosophy is exactly opposite of mine.

          • I keep hearing people complain that there is so much talent on this offense that is being wasted. But I'm starting to rethink just how much talent this offense has. Everyone Knows Riley is the weakest point. But tight ends keep disappointing. So many dropped balls and inability to block. This O-line is probably not well coached but there isn't a nasty player on the roster. Hoffman is clutch and one of the two undeniable talents on the offense. But he is a possession WR and won't beet anyone deep. Williams has a lot of potential but there isn't another good RB around. Outside of Williams there is not a player capable of being explosive. While I don't think Doman is even an average OC yet, there is less talent than we are being led to believe IMO.

            • I think the TE's are better than last year for sure. Apo is overrated by BYU fans. He's just not that good of a player. We had high hopes, but he's just really average.

The OLine is awful. That's a huge part of the struggles of the offense.

              The QB is awful.

If there's two things you need, it's a great line and a great QB. You can get by with average skill position guys if you have a great line and QB.

So, I agree with your take. That said, I think John Beck or Max Hall would still get this unit moving, despite the deficiencies. That's how much a good QB matters. Riley is like Tim Tebow. Guys like him make the line look worse than it is because they hold on to the ball too long and get hit and take sacks and stuff.

How much speed does Apo have? Its tough to tell on tv how his route running or speed is. I hear people say he is fast and can beat people. If that's the case BYU definitely doesn't have a QB that can hit him deep.

I was predicting doom and gloom for this game, but I now have a false hope that the beavs can stop that mickey mouse offense. Curb stomp time!!!
