The nice thing about the OC position at BYU is that it doesn't have to be a Mormon.

I was on the fire-Anae bandwagon as I don't think he was a great OC. However, he was perfect for BYU in that he ran a very disciplined and vanilla offense, something the players and coaches could understand and run while only working 40 hours a week.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

That's a good summary of the problem. The offense reminds me a lot of Crowton days. It can be great when it's rolling, but when adversity hits the end zone seems a mile away.

Vanilla is good. Great, even. Much better than the kind of ice cream with flavor combinations that lose appeal within a few bites.

Which offense? The one from Boise, or the one from Washington St and Weber St? If you answer the latter, then I disagree that it looked like a Crowton offense.

That's the point, right? Crowton offenses were the kind that could put up 49 points one week against StDSU and barely scratch out 14 the next against New Mexico. It's hallmark is inconsistent performance and weak identity.

So who hires Doman's replacement since Bronco has shown that he is the wrong man for that job?

That's a pretty shallow way to be comparing and contrasting the two offenses.

The fundamental problem IMO is that the coaches decided to hitch their wagon to Nelson last year. The offense they ran with him they had to run with him in order for the offense to be productive. Unfortunately, the skill set of the other QBs did not mesh well with the offense they were forced to use to succeed with Riley. The exception is Hill, who has much more physical ability to run the Nelson offense but doesn't have the mental ability yet.

Because Hill isn't mentally ready yet, Doman is forced to significantly skew the playcalling to plays that wouldn't be run nearly as frequently if Hill was ready to run the entire offense.

So in conclusion, the offensive scheme for a healthy Nelson is solid enough, but it breaks down quickly if Nelson breaks down. The question then becomes whether or not we should have hitched our wagon to Nelson to begin with?

The head coach. Bronco has made a mistake, that doesn't convince me he can't make a good hire this go around.

If the rumors of Doman recently being called as a bishop are true, who's dumber -- the stake prez for extending the calling? or Doman for accepting it?

This thread and who would you hire, etc. are fun to read and specualte, but does anyone seriously think in your wildest dreams Bronco is going to make a switch?

We will have a resurgent offense this Friday, at least points wise. We will find a way to win 8 games and bury some of the cupcakes.

It is going to be same old, same old. Plenty adequate W/L record with lots of talk about "what was learned" on our way to reaching our goal of becoming an elite program.

Bronco will get letters from GA's telling him what a wonderful job he is doing and remember the higher priorities not the whining fans. If Holmoe happens to give him any heat, he will show those letters to Tom and tell him to back off.

Right now I am more worried about Utah. They do actually have goals to reach an elite level. Their offense is on par with BYU's and playing in the PAC12 they don't have as many cupcakes to beat up on.

I will have no team left to cheer for reaching the elite level. I would think USU might get there, but they are going to lose Anderson, you can count on that.

They aren't rumors, it's fact. There was a BYUTVSPORTS Youtube interview with Doman that discussed it at length. Doman mentioned having to heavily rely on his counselors.

One of our long lost sage posters commented that hiring Jaimie Hill as the DC was the biggest mistake Bronco has made as the BYU HC, well I am not sure it compares to the mistake of hiring Brandon Doman as the OC. It hurts to say, I was on my hands and knees where Brandon hit Johnathon Pittman twice 12 years ago against Utah, but holy shit this situation is beyond bad. The offense is in a worst state of disjointedness and pathetic play as things were in 2003 under Crowton, but with much more collective talent than Crowton had.

I don't know who or what BYU intends to do to fix this mess, and I consider myself a very patient fan who gives every effort to be optimistic and look on the good side of things - but to lose a game where the only TD scored by the opponent is by a fat Canadian who intercepted a pass from your qb, that exceeds my limit. Seriously, a fat Canadian? WTF, over?!

I listened to most of the 2nd half and the post game show on a drive down to Eagle Mountain. Bronco gave his coachspeek about trusting Brandon Doman, but if I am Brandon Doman I would not trust that. Bronco was outspoken about how the offense is not meeting expectations and then in he threw in his trusting Brandon coachspeek. Brandon is a legend and it hurts to admit his hiring was a mistake of mythical measures but the kid is just presently so far in over his head.

To be honest I am not all that concerned about speculation about who will replace Doman. But I am concerned about whether or not Doman is adequate. You might think it is business as usual, but I think Doman is done. I don't think Bronco believes Brandon is up to the task. Perhaps he stays on staff after being demoted, but I don't think he will be the OC next season.

Very possible, but it wouldn't surprise me either if Bronco made other changes instead of replacing Doman-- replacing the line coach, for example, or bringing in a major QB coach (less likely now with Max Hall on the staff).

After back-to-back abysmal hirings of coordinators not named Bronco Mendenhall I have my doubts. Maybe the third time will really be the charm.
