I laughed a little when I read this. In a sort-of sad, sick laugh kind of way.

Utah will win 4 or 5 games. Utah cannot "afford" to change offensive coordinators again. Especially after just one season of BJ. Utah has had constant turmoil at the OC position. KW appears to be more clueless about hiring an OC than BYU. This turmoil with OCs has led to absolutely no identity on offense. No clarity on the system. How do you recruit a QB to that mess? Well, Utah hasn't. All its chips are on Travis Wilson. Utah (KW) has mismanaged the offensive coordinating position and the QB recruitment much worse than BYU. I said it out loud when KW made the move, but I wonder if hiring Brian Johnson was not his undoing. Ludwig made sense, but KW forced him to run an offense he wasn't comfortable with. He then went through Schramm/Roderick, Roderick, Chow and then hired a TWENTY FOUR YEAR OLD Brian Johnson. *SMFH*

Maybe I misunderstood you and you meant you were actually worried about Utah's future rather than being "worried" that Utah was going to get things figured out. I have no confidence that KW either knows WHO to hire nor that if he DID hire that person that he would let that person run the offense.

Doesn't he have young kids, too?

NEWSFLASH: LaVell was a bishop back in the day. This is hardly without precedent.

I think the only thing a Bishop really needs to do is deal with confessions. He could do that on Sunday after the block and his counselors could handle pretty much everything else during the week.

However, I think the calling excuse is bs. I am sure Anae had a calling and he did fine. The issue, I am convinced, is Doman is just not ready/good enough for the task at hand.

I hope so, but my hope is he will go with someone with experience. Hells sakes I think Reynolds could give it some stability and at least get it to an average level.

I listened or read one of Leach's interviews and he commented that he hired a guy as his offensive coordinator and one of the attributes he looks for is the ability to really influence the game based upon how many moving pieces there are. Clearly, Mendenhall understands that concept as I think his defenses are stout. He made changes to reflect his recruiting base and utilizing its strengths while mitigating its weaknesses. I think Mendenhall gets it, what I think is his weakness is he isn't a people person. I think he is a loner and a introvert by nature. He would rather ride a motorcycle, mountain bike, a horse or surf than hang out with people. Part of that results in him not being real good at reading people. That is one of the reasons I think he isn't a great recruiter, likely the chief reason.

However, if he goes with a more experienced guy with a proven record as an OC I think he can improve this rudderless ship. Doman was a gamble that he could develop into the offensive Bronco and run the ship without needing influence from the HC, who is entirely unprepared to help much on that side of the ball. However, he is not developing into that guy and what I have seen out of him for 17 games and almost two years of managing that side of the ball has me convinced there is almost no probability Bronco could go out and hire a worse option.

Another Newsflash. Lavell's kids were older. Lavell was one of the greatest delegators of our time.

Although he was, I actually didn't know about it until after he retired.

That said, what is being asked of our coaches these days, one should be able to be a Bishop just as easily as anyone else who has a regular job.

Max Hall could step in tomorrow and be a better OC than Doman. Doman ran the option in HS and he ran it at BYU. It's his expertise. I don't know why anybody thought he could come in and coach a pro style offense or whatever that is we're supposed to be watching out there.

I'd bet either the HC or OC at North Dakota State is ready for a raise and a move to FBS football.

I would think that exposure to the 49ers WCO and Anae's offense over the course of 9 years should have been the basis for a lot of learning, should he have chosen to.

Maybe if there are a couple of more train wrecks along the way, like ending with a 7-5 season and one of the best defenses in the nation.

I will agree that you can't always believe Bronco when he says he is committed to a guy or even concept. That is why I don't think Riley will be able to say when he is able to play and when he isn't anymore.

I guess my point is that because the option is the only thing he knew as a player, it's in his DNA. Sure he probably learned some things during his short stint in the NFL or under Anae, but he seems most comfortable running an offense with a mobile QB and plenty of designed QB runs and option plays.

                        Couple of things:

1.) I don't buy that coaches can only coach what they played. I have seen many successful coaches coaching positions they did not play and moving to different sides of the ball. Doman had been a very successful qb coach for 5 years at BYU coaching a basic west coast offense. IMO he probably picked up more knowledge of that offensive system than he did running the option at Skyline High or what it was BYU did his senior year.

2.) It is dumb to think Max Hall could step in right now just because he played a style different than Brandon played when Brandon was an offensive coach during Max's tenure at BYU.

3.) What we know is Brandon is clearly in over his head and BYU needs an OC that is not in that situation. I vote Charlie Stubbs once he is fired from Nichols State or perhaps if Kragthorpe wants to take a promotion from qb coach to OC, with of course a likely pay cut going from LSU to BYU. But the Provo weather is better!

His first choice at BYU was Heaps over Riley. When Heaps fell apart, likely a great deal of that due to Doman's poor coaching, he went with Riley because he was the most likely to lead BYU to wins. He then went with this system this year designed around Riley - who then got hurt. I think the real issue is that Doman doesn't really have a system to incorporate and BYU's offense has become a rudderless ship.

I think the guy is just done.

IIRC, Kragthorpe has significant health issues and lost his OC job at LSU because of it.

So we keep Brandon on board to utilize his amazing priesthood blessings. Kragthorpe's brother could stand in the circle and the good coach Kragthorpe will then finally join the LDS Church!

To be honest I thought Stubbs was more what I wanted. He is in his mid 50's and after this debacle as a HC ends he will be looking for a cushy job to finish out his coaching career. I think he could have a good run as BYU's OC for 6-10 years and then retire.

Really, I don't even care if it is Stubbs. I just want someone with some proven OC experience and Stubbs appears to have that and might be available.

I agree completely in general. But not Doman. Perhaps it's because he needed more experience before being thrust into his current position. I don't know.
