He played great against Utah St. He was double teamed the entire night and still shut down the interior running game. The only success that Utah St had in the running game was going against him. I hope BYU also isn't worried about him.

I thought Star was a little overrated going into the season. No more. He is a beast who deserves all the praise, possibly more, that he gets.

The evidence of suppression by Whit seems a little thin....

Suppression in the sense that the two players in question likely see little or no playing time anyway, and their absence wouldn't raise any red flags.

I'm not sure that Utah can put up more than 6 points against BYU's defense. BYU does have a very good defense. Utah is also on line for a historically bad year on offense: 1) awful offensive coordinator; 2) bad oline; 3) potentially injured starting RB; and, 4) co-starting QBs (one a true freshman and the second a DIII reject).

The only thing preventing this from getting really ugly is the Utes have a great defense and BYU is starting Riley Nelson, also has a terrible oline, and none of their RBs worry me.

I had heard so much about Star that I focused on him quite a bit while watching that game last Friday. I can see why Katy Lied would say that about him but I thought USU did a great job of just avoiding him. You tell from the beginning that they had no intention of going at him. I also thought that he wore down in the second half and wasn't nearly as effective.

But he is a great player, very quick and agile for a big fella.

School. There is no standard NCAA penalty for failing a test for recreational drug usage. The U.'s policy is in line with most schools, who call for a suspension of varying length for a second failed drug test.

The zero-tolerance policy that Blechen is under also fits U. policy for a third failed drug test, which is permanently getting kicked off the team and out of school.

I'm confused. I want to give someone on the Hill some moral kudos for this suspension. Can one of you please help me identify the appropriate recipient of my admiration?

I had heard that there is an NCAA mandated 3 game suspension that Blechen is serving. So, if that is correct thank the good upstanding organization that is the NCAA.

We were merely following our own self-imposed rules. I don't think moral kudos are in order.

This is not an NCAA suspension, since the test was not administered by the NCAA. Those tests are done almost exclusively at NCAA championship events or bowl games. And if it were an NCAA administered test, the punishment would be for one year. [EDIT: The NCAA does not test for recreational drugs; only PEDs.]

Blechen's test was done at school, by the school. I do not know if it was random. This was school policy that was violated, and as a result, the punishments can vary -- witness Tyrann Mathieu at LSU, whose second failed test resulted in just a one-game suspension.

I don't think pats on the back are warranted for living up to the policy, since there was no choice that could be made on the matter.

Seriously. I wrote the BYU Athletic Department thanking them when they suspended Brandon Davies. It's always good to see an organization standing up for what's right and serving the greater good, rival or not.

You could get 96 yards if they give it to you 192 times. He averaged 3.6 per rush against usu - that is indeed mediocre - and wasn't much better against the NoCo powerhouse. JW doesn't scare me, solid and reliable as he may be - an athletic bakup who is highly motivated in order to get more carries, worries me much more.

If he gets the blocking against BYU that he got against USU, you should not worry. But didn't he get a zillion yards against the Cougars last year?
