Playing with ourselves: Cougars v Cougars...Season opener!
I have to work in the Temple on Thursday night. I actually debated on whether to bail or simply miss the first quarter as I am in Minnesota. Thank goodness for DVR!!! Best reason to live in the later days right there. Ok, maybe not the best reason but it sure makes watching sports or anything else on TV way better.
I also know that when BYU wins, it will be because of my faithfulness in going to the temple. So you are welcome.
Last year I relied on the DVR to start watching the Utah game a couple of hours after it started due to a church meeting I was asked to attend. I hope that your faithfulness is better rewarded than mine was.
Leach Return to Provo
BYU alumnus Mike Leach returns to Provo as head coach of the “other” Cougars this time, after graduating from BYU in 1983. Leach never coached for the Cougars but studied and watched the storied teams of the early ‘80s under LaVell Edwards.
Five Straight Season-opening Wins
Bronco Mendenhall and the Cougars have won five straight season openers and are looking for a sixth. All but one of those season-opening victories have been over a BCS program, including the last three over BCS teams. Opening its season for the fourth time against a Pac-12 foe under Mendenhall, BYU looks to improve to 3-1 when playing a Pac-12 opponent in the season opener.
Senior Quarterbacking
BYU enters the season with a senior quarterback in Riley Nelson. The last 11 senior starting signal callers have put together a 117-23-2 record since 1977, a winning percentage of .831. That’s an average of almost 11 wins per season. Steve Sarkisian led BYU to an NCAA record 14 victories in 1996. Ty Detmer and Kevin Feterik tied for the lowest win total in a senior season, still nabbing eight victories apiece. Washington State also has a senior quarterback in Jeff Tuel.
Receiver Streaks
BYU wide receiver Cody Hoffman has a reception streak of 19 games and counting, the 21st longest streak in the nation. Washington State wide receiver Marques Wilson has caught a pass in 24 straight, tied for the ninth-longest streak.
Another Familiar Face
WSU outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons played linebacker at BYU from 1993-96 and later coached as a graduate assistant under LaVell Edwards.
Watch Out Here I Come
Both BYU and Washington State have at least one player on the following award watch lists: Biletnikoff (WR - BYU Hoffman/WSU Wilson), Butkus (LB - BYU Kaveinga/WSU Long), Lombardi (Line or LB - BYU Hansen, Van Noy/WSU Long), Maxwell (Outstanding Player - BYU QB Nelson/WSU WR Wilson), Nagurski (Best Defensive Player - BYU Van Noy/WSU Long), Davey O’Brien (QB - BYU Nelson/ WSU Tuel). BYU also has players on the following watch lists: Doak Walker (RB - Alisa), Outland (Lineman - OL Hansen) and Ray Guy (P - Stephenson) while Washington State features a Lou Groza honoree (PK - Furney).
I went! Took the Puffy Check. It was a nice event for the little chilluns. They had several booths set up for various varsity sports. Soccer, hoops, football, volleyball. The little kids could play with the athletes. For women's basketball, they had a sport court with two hoops. The little kids could take shots with the women's basketball players. For soccer, they had two nets set up and the soccer players played with the kids. The football players sat at a long table eating pizza and handing out football schedules.
The field being watered and getting ready for thurs
A view of the NEZ. The ribbon was in full effect.
The line to check out the football locker room
The locker room under the east stands is super depressing. Very unimpressive. It also smells bad....like a locker room. I was expecting more. Keep in mind that this is not the posh locker room in the SAB with the leather couches and huge TVs. But this game day locker room needs a total overhaul. They need to line the walls with photos, jerseys, etc. as is, it looks like an empty equipment room. This was a serious let down.
The stadium looks great. THolmoe was standing around chatting people up. The screens are definitely bigger than the old ones. No question. The LED ribbon is also noticeable. I still think the screens are the wrong shape and should be bigger, but the NEZ in particular is better off. Also, I'm not sure what purpose the ribbon serves. It is a cool addition but not a very practical one. My guess is that it will simply be used for small in-game graphics, Y logos, or whatnot. I think it may be too small to show scores, for example. For some reason I thought the ribbon went around N, E, and S stands. It is only N and S stands.
I'm pumped for Thursday. Should be a great day, as long as it doesn't rain!

I bet there was an ulterior motive in giving tours of the locker room - fundraising for a remodel.
"It's devastating, because we lost to a team that's not even in the Pac-12. To lose to Utah State is horrible." - John White IV
They have locks in the temple but not in the BYU football locker room. Speaks volumes.
We walked around looking at the different lockers (they arent lockers, not sure why they call them that) looking for the names of various players. We saw Riley's locker, KVN, Tree, etc. My son lifted up Uona Kaveingas locker seat to see what was inside. He found a Mentos wrapper inside.
