It would warm the cockles of my heart to see the Jayhawks rise up. But I would be very surpirsed to see it happen.

        An update...

3 TCU Football Players Get Probation, Fines For Drug Charges

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – Three of the four former TCU football players charged in February in a months-long drug investigation have received fines and probation in return for guilty pleas, Tarrant County officials said Tuesday.

David Yendry, 21, Tanner Brock, 21, and Tyler Horn, were three of 15 students arrested as part of the six-month investigation.

Yendry, who played defensive tackle, pled guilty last Friday to four charges of delivering marijuana weighing more than a quarter ounce but less than five pounds. He was sentenced to three months probation for each count, ordered to pay a $300 fine and cover any court fees.

He also pled guilty to a pair of misdemeanor charges of delivering less than a quarter ounce of marijuana and received six months deferred adjudication probation for each.

Tanner Brock, a linebacker who led the team in tackles during the Frogs’ run to the Rose Bowl in 2010, pled guilty to three charges of delivering marijuana between a quarter ounce and five pounds and received four years deferred adjudication probation on each count. He also must cover court costs and pay a $1,200 fine.

Tyler Horn, an offensive tackle, received three years deferred adjudication for pleading guilty to delivering more than a quarter ounce but less than five pounds of marijuana. He also will have to pay a $300 fine and court costs.

Deferred adjudication, Tarrant County District Attorney spokeswoman Melody McDonald says, means a conviction will not appear on their record if they adhere to the terms of probation.

McDonald said the cases were “reviewed by veteran prosecutors who took into consideration the nature of the crime, as well as the defendants’ backgrounds, prior criminal history and whether they were good prospects for rehabilitation.”

“It is not uncommon for first time offenders to receive probation for delivery of marijuana, and these cases were handled just like every other case prosecuted by this office,” McDonald wrote in an email.

Devin Johnston, who played strong safety, is the remaining football player. He’s charged with three counts of delivering marijuana weighing more than a quarter ounce and less than five pounds.

Just when you thought this was over...

Report: TCU Starting QB Admitted to Drug Us

TCU's starting quarterback Casey Pachall admitted to police that he had used illegal drugs -- including marijuana and cocaine -- and had failed a drug test, according to a police report obtained by the university's student newspaper.

The athlete's admission came the same day last spring that officers swept through campus and rounded up drug suspects, the Daily Skiff said.

Pachall was questioned but not arrested in the raid.

His roommate, Tanner Brock, was arrested on a charge of selling marijuana. Brock has since pleaded guilty and received probation.

According to the report, which the Skiff posted online, Pachall said he had smoked marijuana as recently as a week before the Feb. 15 raid and had smoked with Tanner at least once in the past.

"Casey stated that he has used cocaine and Ecstasy in the past," the report said. "Both were just a one-time thing and (he) hasn't done either since."

          [...]
I think I was more surprised to find out that he wasn't arrested back when this big raid went down. No comment from Coach Gary at this time.

Caught the local sports news clips with Pachall and Coach Gary. Casey says, "I'm sorry" and coach says there will be no discipline since Casey is attending a drug awareness class (or somesuch) and that is all that is required by TCU for its students. Good to see that TCU's returning starter at QB is not held to any higher standard than the rest of the student body.

Yeah, I saw that on the local sports news as well. I was hoping that Allen kid (Brown?) would take over at QB.

I haven't been following TCU closely. One possibility is that Matt Brown is not ready to take over for Casey Pachall. He couldn't beat him out prior to last season but Brown was very young and Pachall played better than many expected. This thinking comes from when OU faced something similar with Rhett Bomar. I think Bob Stoops had a much easier decision to make with Sam Bradford ready to step in. However, Bomars actions were more serious (improper benefits) than Pachall's (drug use) in the eyes of the NCAA. And comparing a future Heisman Tropy winner in Bradford to Brown is just unfair.

I do know that if this had occurred at many programs, Pachall would have been diciplined with a good chance at getting kicked off/suspended from team. Perhaps, I'm painting with too broad a brush. Obviously, Pachall would have faced severe dicipline at BYU. But he also would have faced some serious discipline at Nebraska and probably at OU and Texas.

TCU starting quarterback Casey Pachall was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated early Thursday morning, a Fort Worth police spokesman told ESPN.

Pachall, 21, was pulled over for running a stop sign in Fort Worth at 12:55 a.m. His "breath specimen" was over the legal limit (0.08), said Pedro Criado, Fort Worth police spokesman. Pachall was transferred to the Mansfield (Texas) jail, where his bond was set at $1,000.

I wonder what Patterson's response will be. He let him off easy once. Can he slap him on the wrist again?

Of course, that means he could be un-suspended at any point in time, but that's the right move.
