At one per season, I have no heartburn with it, but as I stated before, this is something to excite Ute fans or Indiana fans. SC is already playing at least one good OOC every year so this isn't overly exciting in the slightest. In fact, SC has basically already been doing this....home and home with Minnesota, home and home with the Luckeyes, nebraska, etc. in the past decade, SC has beaten Michigan, Penn State, and Illinois in the Rose Bowl, Iowa in the Orange Bowl. In other words, this is a big snooze. Oregon started this season against LSU and could get more of those types of games if it wanted. Stanford could do so pretty easily, I would imagine.
It will be nice for the Utes in the years they get to host the bigger name programs in the B1G. Nebraska at RES....pretty cool.
It will also be nice for fans like me who every other year will get to go to a different big10 stadium. I think the only one I would have difficulty attending is nebraska.

this is true. You have an odd geography in all of this...fan of the Utes but living in B1G territory. I imagine it will be an every other year thing so at least you get one reasonable roadie every 2 seasons.
The first is money. Sponsorships: The Fed-Ex Pac-12/B1G Challenge eg. It is a vehicle to have a larger sponsorships, more things to brand, etc. The double header concept at neutral sites also is a big opportunity to exploit for $$$.
The second is about TV content for the Big-10 and Pac-12 networks. To have a viable product for the third tier rights, you have to have games that people care about. This collaboration gives a means to improve the non conference schedules for a majority of the teams in the conference. If you look at the 2012OOC games for some random teams, there is a dire need for an upgrade from a quality standpoint:
Oregon
•09/01 - Arkansas State
•09/08 - Fresno State
•09/15 - Tennessee Tech
•09/01 - San Jose State
•09/08 - Duke
•10/13 - at Notre Dame
Iowa
•09/01 - Northern Illinois (at Chicago, IL)
•09/08 - Iowa State
•09/15 - Northern Iowa
•09/22 - Central Michigan
The marquee games(USC-Michigan, etc) are going to be scooped up by the tier 1 & 2 television partners. But the third tier networks are going to see a big upgrade. A Utah-Iowa matchup does not have the interest of some of the bigger names, but it is more compelling from a TV standpoint than Iowa-Central Michigan or Utah-Utah State. These are the type of games that the two conferences need to improve the quality of the product of the Pac-12/Big Ten networks.
As much as we want it to be about significant games, cool places to visit, etc. It is about the money, and that money is driven by TV ratings.

Apparently you are not excited? I could have overstated because I personally don't think it is exciting at all.
I am excited about it. I was rolling my eyes as you seem to think that Utah hasn't played Big 10 teams before.

Great analysis. The only thing I have to add is that it puts the two conferences in position if big fish expansion (Texas & Notre Dame) happens.
Lets say the conferences like the agreement so well they both decide to play 8 conference games and have two collaboration games. Could that be the carrot that finally gets ND to go to the B1G? They already play 5 B1G and 2 PAC12 teams every year. Maybe the new BCS agreement is favorable to 14 team conferences (like a stipulation that you can have 3 teams in bcs games if your conference is 14 teams or higher).
Is it out of the realm of possibility that ND and Rutgers would join the B1G while Texas and maybe Air Force (fits the pac12 academic profile) join the Pac12? Its not likely but if there is one thing we have learned from expansion is that anything is possible.

im aware that Utah has played a B10 team before. What Utah cannot do, much like Indiana, is get home and homes with the marquee teams when it wants. Your excitement basically supports my theory.

No but apparently our conference can do something just as good if not better. Sort of a trivial point you are making, no?

I think anyone who cares about the BYU-Utah Rivalry game has to realize that this announcement reduces any chance that the rivalry will continue with any regularity beyond 2013.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Yeah. I hate it, too. It was about the only real organic tradition either school had. Sadly it's not the only great rivalry that's dying in the next few years.
