  • BYU bowl prep

Yesterday I was driving around a little and heard 1280 (can't remember which show Hans or Jan/Gunther) talking about Bronco's plan to practice for the bowl. I wasn't sure if I heard it all right, but I thought they said BYU is eligible to practice 16 times after the last game and before the bowl, and Bronco said they plan to only use five of those practices. wtf?? Is this real and if so, why? If this is true, this seems like gross negligence. It's often said the most valuable thing about a bowl is to get in all the practice time to prepare for next year. It's basically like having another spring camp.

This is true. BYU hasn't practiced at since the week of the Hawaii game and won't start practicing until December 19th.

IIRC, we talked about this last year too. Just another thing that pisses me off about Bronco.

Why the hell did we spend all the money on the indoor practice facility?

If Bronco wants time with his family, maybe he can let his assistants run practice.

The numbers I remember from a recent article in The SL Trib is that BYU will use 11 of the 15 practices allowed by the NCAA. One reason given was final exams.

I don't think that is accurate. They only have 11 days to practice once they start up again next week Monday before the bowl game. No way do they get in 11 practices unless the run two-a-days which is even stupider than not using all your allotted practices.

This was in the wire a few days ago. I was surprised that noone was upset about it.

I saw it. I was too angry to comment on it.

Yeah, I think at this point everyone knows this is par for the course with Bronco. I could have swore we have had discussions the previous years about Bronco not using all of his practices. I think the issue this year is highlighted because it's a later date for a bowl game than we usually see.

Tulsa isn't waiting until the 19th... They are starting two days earlier.

Q: We have 17 days until kickoff. For Tulsa, what are you going to work on? What’s the plan?

BB[Bill Blankenship]: The big thing for us is to finish finals. Our guys have exams through the rest of the week. We’ll start this weekend and polish it up a little bit. Starting on Monday, we’ll go to work on BYU and really try to get our game plan and our game preparation in. It’s almost as if we have a two-week window of preparation as opposed to one for our players. That will be really good.

What I don't get about it is, not just why he doesn't do this but how he justifies it?

He is employed as a college football coach. He gets payed to coach football players. Most important part of that is preparing and educating his players in respect to the sport.

As an ER nurse I can't say, "I need some more family time" or "I need some more time to prepare for my NP finals this semester" so I'm going to skip ACLS, PALS, and TNCC this year. I already feel well prepared to handle emergent or life-threatening situations.

It is his job to coach the practices and prepare his players, that is why BYU gives him a very nice salary to do each year.

I know my job comparisons are apples vs oranges, but I think you get the point.

This is Bronco's MO. I don't think its very smart but this is what he does. I'm not surprised at all. The thing that most concerns me is we now have a backup QB who has 6 career passes in games. Give the kid meaningful reps because heaven knows he needs em. If Nelson goes out we are screwed.

We're talking Tulsa here. How long do you really need to prepare for Tulsa? I mean, this is Tulsa we're talking about here.

Even starting on the 19th, it's still 1.5 weeks of prep for Tulsa.

Rest, heal up, get school out of your heads and still have ample practice time. What's the problem here?

We are a whopping 1.5 pt favorite over Yulsa.

But I think you are on to something. Lack of interest.

I was at the last Tulsa/BYU game. BYU's defense, however, missed that game. Fortunately, sports illustrated picked Tulsa to win this one so we should be good.
