If Bronco actually does tell him that, then Bronco is seriously clueless, I mean even more than we all thought. The good coaches tell their players that every position is open, that no player has a guaranteed starting spot. This is true even in cases where it's obvious to everyone that some positions really are locked down. For instance, Bronco should absolutely tell guys like KVN, Apo, and Hoffman that their spot is up for grabs. That's what motivates kids to work their asses off all summer.

Somehow I doubt this is actually what Bronco will tell Heaps, but if it is it might explain why BYU players show up to fall camp looking fat and sloppy.
I tend to disagree. This is why there was a leadership void on the offense. Bronco's inability to choose a QB last year and then have a competition for the position again is what I believe led to division on the team. We had QB controversy last year. We had it this year. And if Jake sticks around we're looking at it again next year. This is all on Bronco.

I think the same thing has happened with our TEs to a large degree. Bronco has this competition for them but what happens when nobody distinguishes themselves from the others? Exactly what happened and the position this year has been pretty worthless. Bronco would have been much better naming someone.

I actually hate Bronco's philosophy in regards to team leadership. He wants guys to emerge as leaders. This is why Riley is the man on that team. Riley has that kind of charisma and drive. Rather, I think that a coach's responsibility is to make leaders. Meaning the coach identifies the leaders and the team falls in line.

Can you think of any better way to set up a starting QB to fail than having the head coach continually reiterate that he wants the backup QB to be the leader of the team and he is going to go way out of his way to make that happen by forcing Doman to make a Nelson package on offense and putting him on the punt team. Just bizarre.

I've seen it go both ways. The bigger issue seems to be that BYU players just don't seem very dedicated to their craft. Maybe it's true for this team that leaders should be chosen, even though I would argue that have leaders organically arise is preferable in a situation where everyone is 100% committed to the team regardless of who the leaders are.

At Michigan, Beilein is having all the juniors and seniors take leadership seminars, and then allowing the leaders to emerge. I like that idea. It makes sure that the leaders are those best fit to lead rather than someone the other players won't respond to as well, while giving everybody the basic principles they would need if it ends up being them.

I agree that it is a huge issue for BYU. It's a cultural issue that I don't ever see going away. I also think it's been the issue has been exacerbated some with Bronco's priorities.

Fun game. For me, the first one all season. Really worthwhile on both sides of the ball.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

Oh man this is funny. Yeah Nelson has harmed BYU tremendously.

If you're going to blame a player, why not blame Heaps for not stepping up and playing up to his ability, for not being in the physical, mental, and emotional shape to make it clear that he was the starter? And for playing like he doesn't give a shit whether we go 3 and out or not. Why not blame Heaps for his embarrassing play against Utah and Utah State?

Don't get me wrong, if I'm Bronco I would beg Heaps to stay and tell him that I believe he can beat Riley out for the job next year. But Heaps regressed this year since the bowl game last season. Yeah there are other people to blame (WRs, TEs, RBs, and OL all underachieved at the start of the season) but blaming Riley is ridiculous.

If we run Heaps off and Nelson loses to all 4 teams with a pulse next year, Nelson's whole career will be a joke, a sick joke played out on BYU's football program.

Oh so you want Nelson's leash to be about 5x shorter than Jake's? Please get Heaps' <redacted> out of your mouth.

Too bad it's not dumber than running Heaps off for Nelson, which is what Bronco is doing by not having a qb competition in spring.

Wow. I am telling you folks again that you should try avoiding CUF during a game and then come back to read the comments after the game is over. Fascinating stuff. If I didn't know the score, I would swear we got destroyed by Hawaii and played horribly.

Let's see here: Vegas had BYU favored by 8 points. We easily beat the spread and won by 21. Riley Nelson was 25/37 for 363 yds with 3 TDs and zero INTs. 363 yds is a season high for him by a long shot. PER = a very impressive 176.7.

Just for fun, I cherry-picked some quotes from the thread to give you sense of just how awful this 41-20 win actually was.

We are still a 4 win team if we played in the Big 12, I guess thats what gets people hot and bothered about how good the program is going...Indy is great for a fanbase that treats all wins no matter the team equally.

I'm not sure what's going on...

Are we ranked #32 in the computer rankings (which control for SOS)? Is Nelson's PER in the top 10 in the country? Is Nelson 4-1 as a starter and 1-0 as a reliever? Is his only loss a pretty close road game with a team who is likely going to be playing a BCS bowl? Is he coming back next year with all the rest of the surrounding offensive talent? Did we just hand Hawaii their worst loss of the season in a game where they were fighting for bowl qualification? Did we sufficiently recover from a seemingly hopeless situation where our QB was almost last in the nation in PER, was scoring more TD's for the other team than ours, and was about to lose to UTAH STATE?

                              or is it...

We suck. Our QB sucks. Our future has been destroyed. I don't care what our record is, I orgasm watching Heaps throw the football regardless of the results.
