please describe this type of competition. I don't think BYU has ever really had one since Doman was hired.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

As for Heaps v. Nelson, I think let Heaps start through the rest of the season as long as the team is winning. Give Nelson time to completely heal up -- I don't know that he can adapt his gutsy play style and be effective with a broken rib. Now, admittedly, some of this is based on how and where the rib is broken, but I still think with his play style he is better on the bench until fully healed.
The idea of Doman as a graduate assistant is also interesting. My understanding, there are no pay restrictions on GAs. The article mentions the SEC bringing experienced coaches in as GAs, and I don't believe this loophole has yet been closed by the NCAA.
But my preference would be to bring Detmer in to replace Weber and move Reynolds to TE/OL. Possibly even give Detmer the position of QB coach/associate Offensive Coordinator, as I believe Detmer could really help Doman to game plan and in making in game adjustments (notice I said help, Doman would still remain OC and make the decisions).

Really? I guess it's hard to draw conclusions on riley given how little he played, but I'm curious as to why you think this.Originally posted by woot View PostIt still does, given that they're both healthy; Riley yet again outplayed Jake last night in his limited time.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Jake went for it last night and kicked some ass. I loved his 2 minute drill drive, and those laser passes up the middle we've been missing."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

BTW, according to Dick Harmon, Bronco has a policy that nobody loses a starting position due to injury.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostHere is a fearless prediction for next week to underscore the ridiculous nature of Broncos approach to this controversy, now poised to enter its third season: Jake will do well against New Mexico State, BYU will win big. And, using the logic many have used throughout the season, the job is now Jakes, not Riley's. Riley looked awful against TCU and lost that game. He couldn't finish tonight, so Jake came in off the bench and lead the team to victory. It is Jakes job now, injury or no. Time to start printing "Jake Up" t shirts."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I'm sure most coaches do. It's not fair for a guy to lose his spot because he gets hurt. Sloan used to always do the same thing.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostBTW, according to Dick Harmon, Bronco has a policy that nobody loses a starting position due to injury. So Russell...what do you love about music? That was based on having a higher QB rating in addition to 11 rushing yards. Since then, another passing attempt was added to his total for some reason, which given the tiny number of attempts, reduced Riley's rating to 171 from 200. It was mostly just a preemptive shot at those who would use Jake's performance as evidence that he should start over Riley. Obviously when you only get two drives there's not a lot that can be said.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostReally? I should restate that I'm not a Riley fanboy; I would greatly prefer Jake to be the starter, but only if he demonstrates that he can perform as consistently as Riley has (which really isn't a high bar)

How many championships did Sloan win? How many Coach of the Year awards?Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostI'm sure most coaches do. huh? Northern Iowa and Eastern Washington do it for you in a way that Idaho doesn't? I don't understand your beef.Originally posted by Viking View PostI don't think I've ever, in my lifetime, missed a televised BYU football game (if not live, then taped).
I haven't even thought to meander over to BYUtv to watch the abomination of a "game" played yesterday. Why don't we just join the WAC?"I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

It should be a different thing to lose your job due to injury and having to come back from the injury and show you can still outperform your backup when you get back to practice. Otherwise it feels like we are playing jr. high football, where feelings are more important than performance. If Jake has a really good game against NMSU and Riley can practice over the bye week there should be a mini competition to see who starts for Hawaii and Riley should have to continue proving himself in practice if he wants to be that guy.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostBTW, according to Dick Harmon, Bronco has a policy that nobody loses a starting position due to injury.

I don't buy what Bronco's saying. If Heaps is on fire next week, I think there's a good chance they roll with him.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostIt should be a different thing to lose your job due to injury and having to come back from the injury and show you can still outperform your backup when you get back to practice. I think Bronco's MO is to scare the shit out of Heaps to think he'll never get a chance to play unless he does everything perfect in practice/preparation (ie get humble, listen to everything coaches tell him, lose the entitlement attitude, work his ass off, etc).Originally posted by jay santos View PostI see it. Just not sure I buy it.
