You are right, a sample size of one head-to-head game is not significant. You would probably need to increase the sample size by like, 400%.

Good idea, let's pick a random four games: 2001, 2006, 2007, and 2009 and we see very clearly which team is better.

It doesn't speak that highly of BYU that you had to go back to 2001 to get to 4 wins when the teams played every year from 2001 to 2013.
