  • Evidence of your love for college football

PAC's visual of walking up to the stadium on a Fall Saturday listening to the band put me in the mood.....not THAT, sickos....I'm talking about the mood for college football.

This is the toughest stretch of the year for me because the season is just around the corner, travel arrangements are starting to fall into place, schedules are starting to be rearranged....but alas...it still isn't quite time yet.

One thing I do because I am a college football nutso......I will often play a youtube clip of band stuff and let it run in the background while I work. Speaking of band cadence, I love this one by the SC band. I will fire this one up and let it run in the background, getting almost nothing done in the process but moving to the beat and getting excited for the games. I absolutely love college bands at football games. In fact, nothing reminds me more of college game day than a band cadence.

Also, Friday mornings at work I blare this

I have two kids that are/were in the BYU band.

I'll add BYU's drumline which includes my son...

It's fitting because I usually start getting geeked up for the season about the time the latest NCAA game rolls out. Same this year. It helps fill the July/August void, practice reports start rolling out, etc.

For me, I am really excited for this year because my two boys remember going to the games and having fun, and are looking forward to football season this year. My boys won't care that the schedule is crap since all they care about right now is watching BYU win. There should be a lot of that at LES in 2011.

I don't get my fix during the summer except when practice reports start to come out. For some reason I read and study all the reports. I don't like watching old games or rewatching a game after I happened, even when BYU wins so reading about practice is all I can do to stay sane until September.

I get my fix by attending games and the tailgating before hand. I like to show up a couple hours early and hang out. I'll also attend any game within a days driving distance. I'll see 3 (maybe 4 with a bowl game) this year since I'm driving to Austin and Arlington and I decided to fly to Oxford.

Uncle Ted, cool cadence. Thanks for posting that. I really can't find many good BYu band clips so I tend to agree with Junkie , however, I think a lot of that has to do with the band director, not the talent on the band.

Do your kids wish the BYU band did more stuff? BYu doesnt seem to make good use of its band on game day and elsewhwere and limits it with many silly musical numbers

The daily podcast by Greg Wrubell during fall camp gets me going for BYU football.

I watch every game I can during the first week, even if it's Walnut State versus Backwater U. I just love the feeling/sound of football in the air.

do people have tricked out viewing areas in their home? flags flying, etc? post pics.

Speaking of which, what is the verdict on flagpoles in front of the house? I think Im getting old because a flagpole is starting to sound cool to me. Esp on game day.

Don't know if this confirms your age or not, but my dad has a flag pole in front of the house that he uses to fly the white and blue on game days.

I agree the talent is definitely there, but the school made a big mistake many years ago when they shifted control from graduate assistants (Bruce Bastian--awesome!) to a geriatric faculty member. As I've lamented before, my agony at the A&M Holiday Bowl was magnified by the halftime show of A&M, with dazzlingly precise marching formations with martial music that made me want to invade Nevada, while BYU's opening number was a cheery "Hey, Look Me Over!" that made me want to impale myself on a goal post.

Back on topic, another thing I love about college football is how certain games or experiences convert people from indifferent bystanders to rabid fans. filsdepac was, I think, only a mild BYU fan before he arrived on campus as a freshman, but after his first game, against UW (Home Run Hale for the winning TD!), he called home with a report that was off the charts in terms of excitement. He was hooked. For me, the Sheide-led win over ASU that led to BYU's first bowl game had a similar effect.

My kids both thought the BYU marching band was very easy compared to what they did in HS. They marching band only practices about 2-3 hrs per week so they both didn't have to put in a lot of time for the little money they got paid.

I think the band adds to the entire football experience more than people really care to acknowledge. I just don't feel the same watching a live game without a band like at a NFL game. In fact, it is often more exciting to watch Texas HS football than the cowboys. I am actually hoping that there will be no NFL this season so I can watch the Pac-12 play on Sunday.

BYU plays the same song every single half time. I think its called like Downtown Georgia Brown or something like that. It gets old.

That was my first game as an undergrad too. Even cooler was the night before I was with my cousin hanging out with Chris Hale.

Sadly that was the pinnacle of his career and probably the highlight of BYU football while I was enrolled in school (mission kept me away during the 2000 and 2001 seasons).

BYU has a band? Why don't they use it?

Every Friday at five I tune into a station back home. At quitting time on fridays, this station plays the OU band playing Ohhhhklahoma. It's hokey as hell but I love it.

As far as college fb in general goes, On Saturdays I'll watch every game from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. while I pretend to fold laundry. I LOVE it.
                            Flash hates it.

You mean you don't like hearing Shostakovich or music from The Sound of Music during halftime?
