BYU "image" re: BYU gear

There hasn't been a lot of BYU gear that I would have considered wearing until recently. Even now, there's still not a great selection. A whole lot of this crap going on:

Notre Dame gear is not cool. It's only prevalent because of the Catholic population.

So...are you saying only Catholics wear ND gear? I would disagree. I see it on BYU campus, etc. (course, that is probably the height of a LDS student's "rebellion" to be different, but I digress)...I just think that the association with "Catholic" vs. Notre Dame gear is not made in the same way that "Mormon" and BYU gear.

If I see someone wearing ND gear...I don't think I have ever said to myself..."Oh, that dude is a fully invested Catholic".

But, if people see someone sporting BYU gear, I think it is more likely for others to look at that person and say: "That dude is definitely a Mormon".

It's a rebellion thing. I once owned and regularly wore a Berkeley sweatshirt for no other reason than I thought it seemed cool. You couldn't pay me to wear one now.

Are we talking about the Y logo? Outside of LDS territory, others are going not going to say, "That dude is definitely a Mormon." They're going to say, "I have no idea what that logo is." Like Y said, the logo is too generic for people to recognize it.

I doubt it. Most mormon BYU fans even shy away from sporting BYU gear for fear of being labeled as "fully invested".

Really interesting. I grew up in Utah and grew up associating BYU with wimps, nerds and basically dip shits. I was at the time also very active in the church.

I ended up at BYU and found out the students there were as unwimpy, unnerdy, un dip shitty as the other two Universities I went to. I also fell in love with BYU BB and eventually BYU football.

I still will only wear BYU gear at BYU events.

My kids on the other hand grew up big time BYU fans due to their dad's indoctrination. Somehow they have a disconnect when it comes to BYU athletics and the University. They will wear BYU gear where ever they go. They associate BYU gear only with BYU athletics.
