  • Steroids at BYU and elsewhere

Almost exactly two years ago my uncle passed away from a heart attack only a few days after competing in his last bodybuilding competition at the age of 53. Incredible guy. Very over the top. Went to BYU from like...1979-83, I think. Big into steroids, no question. Friends with most of the BYU football players at that time, especially the polynesians; having grown up in Hawaii.

Here's some interesting things I used to hear him say:

"You will have a hard time finding a single player at BYU from 1980 to 1990, with the possible exception of Ty Detmer, that didn't use steroids. Lavell knew it was going on and couldn't have cared less. He knew it was going on everywhere else and didn't see why his team should be at a disadvantage. I know because I talked to them about it all the time. We were all buddies and we were all using. And I doubt it's all that much different today, no matter what the NCAA would have you believe. They want most people to get away with it. Money, money, money."

"You will have a hard time finding a single player in the MLB, NFL, NHL, or NBA who does NOT use steroids. I know because my brother provides them to half of them. The list I could give you right this second would blow your mind. Nobody makes it in professional sports without them. Nobody."

"You will have a hard time finding a single American Olympic Gold Medalist in ANY sport who hasn't trained with steroids at some point. This idea that you can really test for them is laughable. No steroid stays in your system for longer than six months and the rumor that says you lose all your gains once you go off them is total bunk. The rule of thumb for me and the people I know is 'two steps forward, one step back.' But without them, you'd be lucky to make half a step forward. There's your difference right there."

"Barry Bonds deserves an asterisk? Every single professional player since the Russians developed the stuff deserves an asterisk. There is NO way to tell who has used and who hasn't. Even if they only used in high school they have developed an advantage that regular folks can never catch up to. Sure, you can detect somebody using NOW, but the giant guy right next to him that just happened to pass the test? Don't believe it."

I've had my oldest on Steroids from time to time. Hopefully it helps him excel as an athlete and gives him the advantage that he needs in competition.

No. I'm not gonna comment. If you want to explain yourself, you can.

Why don't you think Ty Detmer was on steroids?

Are you asking me? I'm just quoting my uncle. Although Ty looked way too skinny to be using much of anything if he was. But I did go back and watch our win over #1 Miami and I have to say...it's hard not to suspect that of our defense. Wow.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn this about professional/Olympic athletes. I once sat in on a lecture by Charles Yesalis that basically indicated that athletes are using stuff today that WADA hasn't even heard of, let alone devised a test for.

Here's an interesting story on testing, although it's 3 years old:

Steroids ran wild in the 70's and 80's. My father played and coached college football during this time period. He has told me many stories about what took place at the time. I would say that stating that everyone was on them except Ty Detmer at that time is a bit exaggerated. I would also say that even though the testing has come a long way, there are still many professional and college athletes that are still using performance enhancing drugs and we are still behind the times in our professional sports.

Also, there are still many athletes that make it to the professional level without using steroids. Many.

It is a factually incorrect assertion. No explanation needed. It is untrue.

He is wrong about a lot of things, this is true. I would find it hard to believe that Lavell was encouraging it. I would also find it hard to believe that Lavell wasn't aware that it was going on either.

Steroids have much more of stigma now than they did in the 70's-80's (as they should). Assuming everyone is using now because everyone was using then isn't very sound.

It is. Until they start doing blood testing they wont find HGH in the athletes system.
