I agree that winning could help us get invited to a major conference, but I am also saying that we can get access while in a conference (like teams you list did) while enjoying post season opportunities that are currently off the table

I prefer great season schedules to post-season access to lousy bowl games. If there were an 8 or 16 team playoff I would feel differently.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostI agree that winning could help us get invited to a major conference, but I am also saying that we can get access while in a conference (like teams you list did) while enjoying post season opportunities that are currently off the table

I was happy with Bronco before Riley came along. I think I will be happy with Bronco after Riley is gone.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostWe rarely beat teams we aren't favored against. A great coach will win some of those games. I don't think it's asking too much to happen more often than it has.
This year we were favored against SJSU, OSU, and Utah, and lost.
We were not favored against Boise and Notre Dame, and we played admirably in those games, but lost.
The rest of our wins we were favored by a bit, iirc.
I'd like to see us win games where we're not favored a little more frequently. I get if you're not favored you're usually playing a good team, so you won't win them all, but occasionally would be nice.

I don't understand what conference membership has anything to do with those teams' BCS invites. Unless you think they played shitty competition and inflated their records thereby affording them access. I prefer great regular season schedules year in and year out rather than a once every decade or three BCS/playoff game.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostDid those teams win when they were part of a conference that had access afforded to them according to the bcs rules?

Jury's still out on that. Did Riley single handedly befuddle Mendenhall to such a degree or has Mendenhall just lost his mojo? Probably both.Originally posted by wapiti View PostI was happy with Bronco before Riley came along. I think I will be happy with Bronco after Riley is gone.

Non of those teams get invited without conference affiliation and inclusions by the rules of the BCS.Originally posted by lambdacoug View PostI don't understand what conference membership has anything to do with those teams' BCS invites. I think it is ridiculous to say their conference affiliation was a benefit.

Every one of those teams (except 2004 Utah) had a guarantee if they were the top ranked BCS team and in the top 14 (was it 14?) in the BCS standings.
That is a huge benefit.
It's how NIU is getting in right now. If NIU had the guarantee that BYU has moving forward, they wouldn't be headed to a BCS bowl this bowl season.
NIU is benefitting greatly from their conference affiliation this season AND the arrangements said conference has with the BCS.

Sure, NIU is benefitting purely because of conference. I still think its more accurate to say that the early busters, Utah, BSU and TCU, made a BCS game despite their conference. I honestly do not think the benefit of a once in a decade (or few) bowl game is worth forfeiting independence and great schedules like we see in 2013. If we have great years, we will be in the discussion. I could spring for an ND type agreement with the MWC/Big East, but full on membership isn't worth it, IMO.Originally posted by Portland Ute View PostSure it was.

If BYU scheduled well in its Ooc games while in a conference it would have a schedule that is every bit as good as they will get in most years as an independent. 2013 is an anomaly and not sustainable long term. Plus byu would get access to a meaningful postseason, conference rivalries and something to play for.Originally posted by lambdacoug View PostSure, NIU is benefitting purely because of conference. We have a lot of years experience with ooc scheduling while in a crappy conference. 2013 may be an anomaly, or not. We were promised better schedules after 2 years of independence. So far so good. I think pulling the plug on independence so soon for those conferences is just not a winning move. I'd give up independence in a heartbeat for the big 12 or pac 12, but not the MWC or Big East. I'd rather let independence have more time than that.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostIf BYU scheduled well in its Ooc games while in a conference it would have a schedule that is every bit as good as they will get in most years as an independent. 2013 is an anomaly and not sustainable long term. If BYU can schedule 12 games as an independent then they can schedule 4-5 quality games as a conference member. BYU's failure to upgrade its ooc schedules in the past has nothin to do what they can do. You have more confidence in filling quality 12 game schedule than a 4-5 quality ooc schedule? That makes no sense.Originally posted by lambdacoug View PostWe have a lot of years experience with ooc scheduling while in a crappy conference. 2013 may be an anomaly, or not.
